Actually, i believe that my University of Missoura degree can compete with the best of them. But, then i am a hillbilly.

We are whipping an old tired horse on this issue. I had this debate many times on the otter channel.

You are on one side of the fence and I am on the other.

    I can't agree Torbek.

For someone to 'Learn' a person needs the opportunity, the ability and the motivation to do so. The teacher, tutor, trainer, or whatever you want to call them, is there to provide the opportunity part of the equation. A lack of knowledge of the subject is clearly going to put them at a disadvantage but it does not follow that an in depth knowledge is going to automatically make the teacher into a better opportunity provider.

You have quoted one point out of three I made pursuant to my commnet that univetsities tend to employ the person with the greatest subject matter knowledge as the onus is on the student to learn, not the lecturer to teach...

Accordingly, they employ (or at least should but it rarely works out that in practice) lecturers from whom students can/will learn the most - ergo the one who knows his subject material best.

Having said that, this assumes students are all fullly motivated and already KNOW how to learn.

In real world they don't so perhaps the IDEAL lecturer has a combination of teaching skills AND knowledge of subject matter.
I think we are probably saying the same thing.

    Nice spelling by me though...

Can't spot more than 2 or 3 errors in my 100 or so words!

I start at a Uni next week lecturing/instructing in management. I have also started a GradDipEd this week.

I will continue the study even though I am more than confident in my knowledge of subject matter I will deliver...because I would also like to know more about teaching effectively...

I have taught classes in the past, but don't consider myself a teacher... Merely a facilitator of knowledge...

    A FoK???

No worries HB....I'm sure if we 'spoke' we'd both realise our thoughts aren't overly different from one another.

I think it's more down to the individual and how much they care about their job, how much pride they have etc. I don't think education can change the person per se...just gives them the tools....it's then up to them how they use them???
My grandma would care and want to do the best job possible if I needed a heart transplant if there were no other option than her doing it! Personally, I'd want the person who could prove that they knew what they were doing, and paper is the best way to do that.

I don't get the Bristol comment. Its the 7th best uni out of over 100 in the UK

Where did you go to uni KK?

No, Dougal, I didn't mean that knowledge is all you need, but everyone here must have known in their lives teachers who had all the papers but could not teach a fish to swim.

We are speaking about teaching a language, not an all round balanced education.

I think there is a difference, and I think teaching a language (especially English), cannot come from just textbooks. The nuances of the language are not in the books.
