    Free range chicken

Does anyone prefer to buy free range chicken in Thailand ?

I wanted to cut back on the ubiquitious pork dishes I eat and replace it with chicken and fish more often - thinking that free range chicken would be better than Thai factory farmed chicken , I asked how much it was at the market and was told about 250 baht a kilo vs 80 baht for the steriod version

and fish ? knowing how unscrupulous asian business people are , if finding farmed fish that has not been fed with ground up john does and chinese sourced groth hormones , is difficult ?

I am interested to hear of experiences of people who try or are able to eat more organic meat in Thailand

I guess you know of the Paleo Robbie website, might give you some idea of what's available ( which is pretty much everything) and at what cost.

Likewise. Just checked the one I bought this morning at Foodland, 120 Baht per Key vs 330 Baht per Key at Paleo Robbies and there'd be delivery fees to add. They'd want to be fucking good, the Betagro ones certainly are at about a third of the price.

Hate to disappoint you but just because it says its Free range means shit.

Some countries only need to open the hen house for one hour and they are Free range.

If they are Organic they have to be approved organic.

I read somewhere they can satisfy the 'free range' criteria if there's an accessible hole large enough so that the chicks are 'free' to wander outside.

What we do. Only have about 10. Get eggs but don't eat the chickens.

Buy fryers and roasters from cousin who has stall in local market.

Know what they are fed and how they are raised so no worries.

You could buy a couple of the red hens at 200 Baht each, then get free range eggs?

We have free range chickens at home but a lot have names and I'm too soft to kill them.

Our pond is full of organic pla nin and pla tabtim but they take an awful long time to grow. Taste good though.

Balders, what's quite clear is you need to move else the Chicken proportion of your monthly living cost will get out of hand. You can get a 2kg chook in the UK for 120bht, well £3 actually. So its either buy Chico's Land and raise your own or move to the UK or give up chicken.

How can they be 'free range'-ing eggs when they don't move, even if they wanted to. Seems stoopid to me.

What does free range eggs really mean?

Free-range eggs are eggs produced from birds that may be permitted outdoors. ...Eggs from hens that are only indoors might also be labelled cage-free, barn, barn-roaming or aviary, following the animal happiness certification policies, also known as "happy chickens" or "happy eggs."

    Exactly.
    Many do just that.
    Issues resolved.
Except if one is a fucking captured whinging city-slicker that purchase all their goods at the beloved Western-style supermarket [thinking they're receiving exceptionable quality] - there's no hope.

Noting, there is no comparison like homegrown "free-range" eggs and in some cases [depending on how they're raised/kept] the same applies to the chooks.

He is indeed. Making a living. Jeff has lived and knows Thailand better than most here. But we stray of the price and goodness of Thai chicks.

Ballder is paying about the right price for his chocks at local market although probably only semi free range as are my lovely wife's.
