Pretty sure I stayed at the same hotel 18 years ago when it was called Maanam Riverside.

Nice hotel and location although I was a noob at the time, prefer the rough and tumble of the Koh Sarn Road nowadays.

Great central location and transport links to all the sights.

Yes, I have thought of this. We could fly to Chiang Mai at Nov. 22 and back to Bangkok on our departure day. The return flight is very late in the evening. Does Chiang Mai have the water festival with floating Krathongs?

That would leave enough time for my wife to visit the temples and the shopping temples in Bangkok. Plus Lumpini Park with the lizards.

I was in Bangkok for Loy Krathong about 40 years ago but did not see the lantern festival in Chiang Mai. Actually I did not even know about Loy Krathong when booking. I learned about it only in Bangkok, sheer luck, it was beautiful. Beautiful pictures of the lanterns, thanks.


The Ibis Hotel Riverside is in walking distance of the BTS.

Not so much for the rough and tumble now, approaching 70 soon. But I will ask for my wife. She has never seen a sexy show and we want to change that. I personally prefer a girl in private, but that's not an option with the wife.

Your hotel is a short taxi ride to Pat Pong,should be a few entertaining shows on.

Being by the river is a fantastic way to get around Bangkok and visit the sights.Hire a long tail boat for the day,great fun.

Yes. It's shit.

I usually stay at Hilton or Chatrium just accross it. You can occasionally find good rates for it.

No hotel boat. I don't know how far it is from the pier.

Not the same hotel at all Chitty. The one you are speaking of is on the Bangkok side, the one T is looking at is over in Thonburi. It would be great but you have to take a shuttle ferry across to it. But its close to the Last BTS stop on this side of the river. Probably the best value of the riverside hotels. Seems fun to me with a cross river ferry daily.

YD is a bit of a hotel snob.

Ibis is generally fine.
If the chain (branch) is good in Saudi it must be A-Ok here...

He has certainly stayed in enough of them(!)

its fine, went a wedding there a while back, close to BTS (10 mins walk?)
enough ressies around etc.
not my favourite part of town but thoroughly serviceable

Pattaya and Bangkok. Pattaya we disagree big time. Argued in fact. Bangkok, no once again look at the source.

Takeovers made a great choice for his stay in BKK, right on the river, pool on the river, and a river view room if he wants... Not going to knock your socks off but a good bang for the buck. A modern and well staffed 4 star hotel you can get deals on as they like to stay full year round..

Thanks for the advice. I have now booked the Ibis riverside. After I thought about going to Chiang Mai as well but skipped that. Maybe another trip.

It has a shuttle service to the next BTS station which is about 1km away, a little too far for several times daily walks.

A station for the river taxi boats very near. I think we will do a ride or two before we decide on doing a klong tour.

Next on the agenda, besides the temples will be a good show of Thai traditional dances. My wife used to teach traditional filippino dances before moving to Germany. She now has her own amateur dance group mostly children of filipino german couples. They are occasionally called by the phil. embassy to perform on their behalf.

Anyway, I hope the OP avoids breakfast at Ibis. It's certainly one of the worst.

I pay 2000 baht/night.

@TO - Chiang Mai is nice and I think your wife would enjoy it. I went there in July and I liked it - slower pace than Bkk, lots of history (temples, etc) and nature stuff too. I flew Air Asia from CM to Bkk. Bkk to CM, I took the O/N train - have never been on a sleeper train so wanted to try it. But I've been on a sleeper ship, as I'm an island girl.

Katie, I quite like the train but it got slightly ruined when they introduced the alcohol ban in a knee jerk reaction to a one off event. Its still pleasant and i would recommend the 2nd class sleeper, Some good info on the website

I was there about 40 years ago. I liked it a lot but it must have changed a lot since then. A few years later I was in Baguio also and somehow have them in the same category. Beautiful cities in the mountains.

At the time I went to Chiang Mai by bus and enjoyed the experience. A funny encounter with a travel agency in Bangkok. They had a big sign up offering tourist bus tours to Chiang Mai. I inquired and they told me, yes we offer them but they are way too expensive. Just go to the bus terminal and buy a first class bus ticket there. They even wrote the address down in Thai to show the taxi driver.

My wife is more eager to go back to Baguio. We went there together right after we got married. Being in Baguio in December she thought she knows now what cold is. She wants to compare here feelings now with that first visit.
