    Twitch

    What's the story?

My eldest has just signed up and is pretty good at gaming, he reckons he can get rich if I link a PayPal account up to it.
Apparently followers donate money to watch the gamer perform different missions.

Not sure about it all, what do you think?

Fortnight players can make a heap of dosh for less than 40 hours a week.
But they have to be good players and engage with their followers with a hook and with personality.

I fear your lad would miss school and dinners in his attempts and still not make it big time.
He'd need his own channel and specific apps to run the audience.

    Have a read.

That sort of money is like a gold rush, but the gold is only rare nuggets and not gold dust spread out for everyone.

    depends on the game
    depends how good he is
depends on how much time he has available
depends on his computer skills to record and edit
depends on how well he could market his channels - twitch , youtube , twitter , facebook , instagram etc

not so straighforward as just streaming himself playing

This guy is apparently the top-ranked player in Oceania and he makes 'between $300 - 400 per week'.

The top streamers make millions a year. There are three primary ways streamers make money. They have subscribers who autopay a monthly fee which is usually $5, donations which can be huge, and from twitch bits. Twitch divides streamers up in to three categories the first is new streamers after you unlock a series of requirements you will become an affiliate. Once you have built your viewer base and average 70-80 viewers per stream you can than apply for partnership. Many partnered streamers are doing it full time. It is not a scam twitch is owned by Amazon and on a nightly basis has a larger viewership than Netflix.

He may be the top ranked Fortnite player but making that low of income he is not a top rated twitch streamer. There are more popular AU streamers making a lot more money than that.

Not even close. Do you really think that Amazon one of the worlds largest corporations is running a pyramid scheme? You simply do not have a clue what you are talking about.

    Just stumbled across this:

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/...ectid=12073881

    Some interesting info.

Apparently one dude is on AU$435,400 per month and other professional streamers "earn an average of $4400 to $7300 per month".

So basically people pay to eavesdrop on the video-gamer's live action.

    A confession to make:

When I used to run sex-chat services in the UK yonks ago, I also ran a live-stream online so that others could secretly eavesdrop on the dumb chat-up lines of the punters on the sex-chat service.

It was very popular. Sort of like a peeping tom/voyeur service.

Pewdiepie makes 1mil a month playing videogames.

People make thousands a month by just posting movie trailer reactions.

Meanwhile people doing some really creative stuff get 25 subscribers.

And he does not even stream on twitch. He just posts vids on youtube. When you combine the two mediums you can make serious money. That does not even factor into sponsorships. Companies love to partner with these guys as their viewership buys the stuff that these guys use in their PC's and streaming equipment.

Let me be clear. The video game industry is bigger than Hollywood. Twitch has a higher nightly viewership then Netflix globally. Think about that for a second. The average age of most gamers is 35 so this is not a bunch of kids. There is serious money to be made if you know what you are doing.

Agree wholeheartedly, but its the same story as snowboarding, skateboarding, bmx bikes - and pretty much everything else - the one percent of the one percent will make some real money. Everyone else - not so much.

Yes and no. You are right there are lots of people who will try and fail but there is a real chance for people who stick with it and are interactive with their chat. Playing the right game is key if you are playing one of the top games as a noob you will have no chance. You have to start off with a niche. A game that is more obscure but still interesting for people to watch you play. I have seen people in the last year go from having 38 followers to 10,000. Still hard to break through but maybe not as hard as the board sports.

Children addicted to the survival shooter sensation, which is free to download and play, have previously racked up bills into the hundreds on upgrades

Every few months the game's creators Epic Games, based in Cary, North Carolina, releases limited edition content for Fortnite.
These range from powerful new weapon upgrades to new outfits, some of which can be earned by completing challenges.
With Season Four now live and soon available to play, the fear is that its array of new accessories will prove attractive to younger gamers, tempting them into handing over their parent's hard earned cash to rapidly earn rewards.

Many younger players have already come unstuck, thanks to the game's systems of reward tiers. The more time spent playing, the better the rewards.
Parents across the world have bemoaned their Fortnite-obsessed children's spending habits since the game's release in September 2017.
One mother, Julie, told MoneySavingExpert last month that her son spent £150 ($205) on Fortnite without her permission.

Fortnite took to Twitter to announce the release of Sesason 4. Every few months the games creators Epic Games, based in Cary, North Carolina, releases limited edition content for Fortnite
    WHAT ARE FORTNITE BATTLE PASSES?

Fortnite offers its players powerful new weapon upgrades and new outfits as rewards, some of which can be earned by completing challenges.
But the game's rarest loot comes from optional premium Battle Passes, which grant players better quality items for each season's reward tiers.
None of the prizes impact your chances in-game, as they are purely cosmetic.
Battle Passes are paid for with in-game credits, called V-Bucks, purchased with real world money.
    One season's Battle Pass costs 950 V-Bucks, with 1,000 V-Bucks costing £7.99 ($9.99).
However, it's also possible to buy each season's reward tiers individually for 150 V-bucks, which unlocks their game-play immediately.
If you were to do this for each of the season's 100 tiers, this would cost around £120 ($150).

She said: 'He thought as his name was the user name on the game the money was coming out of his account. Sadly this was not the case.'
Another, Jo, said her eight-year-old son had racked up an £80 ($109) bill on Xbox One.
She said: 'You know what it's like - we bought the game for my son and he was super-excited and we set it all up as quick as we could.
'When we put payment details in we didn't think it could be used in-game... but he spent £79.99. He's had a ban and lost some pocket money to pay it back.'
Earlier this year, a concerned parent on Mumsnet complained that their son had 'accidentally spent £80 [$108] on Fortnite'.

Teknique is a Tier 23 skin and is a graffiti artist. Likely developed to draw attention to the new sprays that have also been launched

The anonymous user wrote: 'He was literally scrolling through, and press the A button instead of B. It was done by that one press of a button.
'Any ideas? I really can't afford to lose £80 [$108], certainly not this month.'

WHAT ARE THE NEW FEATURES OF FORTNITE SEASON 4?

During season three of the popular game, players noticed a metor in the sky above the map.
It appeared that the impact site would be 'Tilted Towers', the popular metropolis that is popular amongst the Fortnite faithful.
The meteor broke up and landed overnight, signalling the start of the long awaited season 4.
The existing map was destroyed and a plethora of new additions were made to the game including new skins, weapons alterations and minor bug fixes.
    These include:

    • Craters populate the map and 'Dusty Depot' has been destroyed and replaced with Dusty Divot - a large crater
    • Each crater produces rocks that create low gravity for players
    • Loot Drops - Eliminated players can now drop certain items when they die
    • Structures on the starting island can now be destroyed
    • Headshots are now prioritised when other body parts are in the way
    • On the starting island, you can now see other players (and player-created structures) about three times further away than before
    • You can now mark cosmetic items as favourites in the Locker

    • 'Blockbuster Challenge' - requires players to complete seven weekly challenges in total to unlock a mystery skin

    • Zoey (Tier 47)
    • Valor (Tier 71)
    • Squad Leader (Tier 87)
    • Omega (Tier 100)

    Notable bug fixes

    • Fixed an issue where the compass showed '360' when it should have been '359'
    • Fixed an issue where players could get stuck on the Inventory screen when opening and closing it very quickly multiple times in a row
    • Players can now emote while rocket riding
    • Fixed bugs that were causing some erroneous misfires and input errors on mobile

    WHAT IS FORTNITE?

Fortnite is a game of survival where players create a superhero avatar and compete against each other on a dystopian island.
Each game, or 'match' as each competition is known, starts with 100 players.
The aim of the game is to be the last one standing. Users can form allegiances and play in small groups.
To enable this and the interactive experience, the game allows completely open communication between players.
Inspired by the Hunger Games novels and films, gamers search for weapons to help them survive.
Armed with quirky weapons and amusing dances, the game has swept across the gaming world, with children flocking to it.
While there is no exact figure on how many children play Fortnite, the game has so far pulled in an audience of over 3.4 million players.

There are three new gliders which feature in the update. These new designs will be unlocked for users as they progress through the game

WHAT IS THE NSPCC'S ADVICE FOR PARENTS OF FORTNITE PLAYERS?

The NSPCC has launched new advice for parents of young people playing the multiplayer action survival game Fortnite: Battle Royale.
It comes amid concerns over a function in Fortnite which automatically allows users to speak to other players through voice and text chat functions.
It means children can be contacted by anyone else who is playing the game.
Research from NSPCC revealed that that one in four children have been contacted online by someone they don’t know.
The research is based on reviews by children and parents of the most popular apps, sites and games currently on the market, featured on the Net Aware app and website.
The NSPCC is offering parents the following advice:
    - Talk to your child regularly about what they are doing online and how to stay safe. Let them know they can come to you or another trusted adult if they’re feeling worried or upset by anything they have seen. You can use our conversation starters to support you when starting these conversations.
    - Explore your child’s online activities together. Understand why they like using certain apps, games or websites and make sure they know what they can do to keep themselves safe.
    - Agree your own rules as a family when using sites, apps and games. You can use our Family Agreement template to help you get started.
    - Manage your technology and use the privacy and parental control settings available to keep your child safe.

In a written statement, a company spokesman said: 'Season 4 is starting off with a BANG. Shards of a massive comet have crashed into the map altering the landscape.
'Discover gravity-defying Hop Rocks and find new ways to play. Jump in and witness the aftermath of the impact while you level up your Battle Pass and earn all new loot.
'The Season 4 Battle Pass sports 100 tiers of awesome new rewards, including new cosmetic items, emotes and Sprays.
'Start a movie marathon in Save the World's latest questline, Blockbuster! Part 1 starts with Five quests and one Landmark Mission.'

Trails (pictured) are what is shown when a player jumps into a game. users can choose from more options now so that for the first few seconds of a battle a customised trail follow the avatar as the game begins

Laura Randall, NSPCC's associate head of child safety online, said: 'Apps, sites, and games such as Fortnite: Battle Royale can be great opportunities for young people to play and engage online.
'However in light of emerging concerns about the risks children could be exposed to, we are urging parents to be aware of Fortnite's features. It's vital parents have regular conversations with their children about the games they are playing, and how to stay safe online.

So glad that Fortnite game isn't widely available here (yet!).

Policing the kids games and those fucking micro-transactions in particular is an utter pain in the arse.

TBH he will have a tough time growing a twitch channel playing that game. He will be buried at the bottom of the list. But as long as he is having fun that is all that counts.
