Places in Thailand WORTH a visit

Leoi Province - Town - Chiang Khan.

Chiang Khan is a small sleepy little town in Loei Province on the Maekong river .

There isn't much to do in the town but it is a very laid back place and if you have transport a few good sites to go and see.

The meeting of the Haan River and the Maekong is picturesque with a giant Budha to bring peace to the area. There are various water falls, rapids, weaving places to go and visit.

However it is the two guest houses there that are the real reason for going to stay there.

Maekong Guest House is an old wooden guesthouse ran by a lady called Pim and her three dogs. Its nothing special cheap and cheerful but if you can get the corner room you can have the breeze from the river blowing through your room at night time.

She has a nice big balcony area which is perfect for sitting and watching the sun go down.

Rooms were four years ago 150 a night - I don't know now as that was the last time I stayed at Pims but she is still there.

Next door a newer guest house called Sams has opened up a year or so ago.

Its clean with three different levels.

If you opt to have rooms on the top floor you can have a balcony with french windows right out to the rivers edge (or near enough). In the morning in cold season the mist will be right up to the window. Downside is no ensuite toilet in these rooms - it is however right next door.

Rooms with aircon and toilets are available as well but they don't offer such a good view. The roof area and the second floor are setup for guests to relax on with comfy chairs and tables.

This is one of my favourite places in Thailand.

Next time - Beung Khan near Nong Kai

    Nice post quirrel.

My personal favourite place in Thailand is Chiang Dao about 75 km North of ChiangMai.
Chiang Dao is the third highest point in Thailand and the 2 guesthouses lie at the foot of the mountain.
My favourite guest house is Chiang dao nest, well appointed little wooden bungalows and fabulous food. The man owner is from Norwich and the lady owner was trained in cheferry in England. She cooks fabulous poncy fusion food at reasonable prices, the menu changes each evening.

Just get really drunk before 4.pm and weave your way to Pantip, buy a camera and don't remember anything about it till you see it lying next to you full of the smut pics you can't remember taking the previous night.
I found this method worked fair well for me.

I may be showing my age here, but two of my favourite places in Thailand are the Khmer monuments at Phanom Rung (Buriram/Surin) and Pra Viharn (Technically in Cambodia, but only accessible from Thailand - Si Saket is nearest town).

Naturally, in terms of architecture and splendour they cannot be compared to Angkor, but then again, neither should they.

In addition to the architectural, historical and cutural aspects of the sites, they both have superb views of the surrounding countryside.

Not so impressed with Phi Mai in Khorat - don't get me wrong - it is well worth a visit, but being in the middle of a small town sort of spoils the atmosphere a bit.....

    south of Loei

About 50 km south of Loei there is a mountain called "Table" in thai, i do not know translation, beautifull place, few resort type accomodation facilities, each bungalow is a carriage, very nicely transformed into rooms...

Few Km away you can find some kind of mountains or rocky hills with a walkway trough, better get a guide to go trough as the marking is very poor and you can get lost pretty easily, this place is as gorgeous as near the James Bond Island near Pukhet, exept it is on soil and not in the sea ...

I'll dig in my Pc for pics and give some more details about how to go there...

This place is well known by Thai tourists mainly, the rocks are 50 meter high +, and you will see trees on top, there is very little soil on top of this rocks, the roots of the trees are streching down the 50 rock meter to get nutrition for the survival of the trees....

This place could be a climbers heaven...

The Loei area is said as the coolest over Thailand seen on a 24 hour yearly average.... so get a sweater if you go there in the actual season...

Or few bahts to buy the sweaters the locals are hand manufacturing.

Nice waterfalls as well, really have to post those pics, a nice stop on the way up to loei...

I used to do a lot of photography but lost interest since a fooking theif broke in the apartment where I used to live. The fookwit took my SLR Nikon F90X with three lenses and a Nikon Digicam. I bought the F90X for approximately 1,000 pounds from Dixons and the time it got stolen I lost over 500 pics that I took all around Thailand.

I agree WS, those are magic places, the latter near my wifes home

I also like PhiMai, just because it is in the middle of town, weird.

Yeah CMN, that Chiang Dao is very nice

Once Harry gets here he can write about places that he has read about and wishes he could go to but he never will.

Tee Lor Su in Umphang is worth a visit, it is the largest waterfall in Asia. The only problem is the accomodation, these consist of tents, tents or more tents.

The waterfall itself is stunning and the scenery on the way from Mae Sot to Umphang (a full days drive) is also stunning and the trip is worth it just for this.

I recentley visited this really cool cave in Nong Bua Lamphu - below from http://www.thailandguidebook.com

    Erawan Cave
is a large cave in Amphoe Na Klang. Its entrance is very much higher than ground level and curving stairway of 107 steps ascends from the base of the hill to the mouth of the cave. The interior resembles a large hall, capable of accommodating hundreds of people. Stalagmites and stalactites create an exotic beauty. This cave has an opening onto a high cliff overlooking the picturesque fields below.

It was a bit of a climb to reach, but well worth it. Inside the cave was lunar-like; I kept expecting the Soup-Dragon to come out talking in a high whooping voice.....but then I expect that most places I go to.

Nature really does provide some beautiful awe-inspiring sights - makes me feel quite humble.

I agree with many of the above, but I've a special fondness for mountains. Chiang Dao also has a moderately interesting wat-in-a-cave which I like to take visitors to (though Wat Phanom Rung is my favourite "wat"). Pai is a bit backpacker-ridden, so I tend to just drive on through. Mae Hong Son is nice when it's cool as it gets quite unpleasant in the hot season.

Why 4 months? Do you have to wait for the school holidays?
