I went through Melbourne earlier this year and they insisted we hold our passports as we went through the X-ray machine and not put them with our belongings.
Security chap got quite snarky with the guy in front of me when he put his pp in the tray with his keys and phone.
Perhaps the body scanner is much less harsh on the data in the pp than the x-ray machine for hand luggage?
I asked the guy on the xray machine "Why passports?"
Inevitably I got the inane grin and mumble of "passport xray."
Cheers Einstein.
Fuckin stupid is all.
It's probably because you look well fucking dodgy.
Hmmm. quite possible I suppose. Cheers.
I was thinking you looking dodgy hasn't ever been a problem before....Originally Posted by crackerjack101

In case you have a wire garrot concealed inside your passport.....
Well that's that.
Left Chiang Rai at 10.00 on Tuesday and arrived Darwin at 05.00 the next day.
Did what had to be done on the Wednesday then flew out of Darwin at 06.00 today, Thursday.
Got home by 19.00 local time.
All good.
Points to note;
Thai customs control is absurd. Singapore and Aus is OK.
Chiangi is still the best airport in the world and the service at Harry's bar is perfect.
Darwin lounge is obscenely expensive and very uncomfortable.
Jetstar food is appalling but, the chocolate brownies (4 to a pack for $3) are good.
Thai Smile is Ok and you get a snack, coffee and water for free- ish.
All in all not a bad trip. I shall now sleep for 48 hours.
