^ Is it? I don't know. I haven't seen any figures to indicate that it has and there certainly isn't the media discussion/moral panic which there was at the start of the millennium. Where I lived in 2000-2002, it was absolutely everywhere, and very obviously so. That doesn't seem to be the case now but I guess it's entirely possible that I'm just not seeing it.

I really don't know either. I'm just going by a few news reports I've seen about large busts.

Yaba consumption is up, isn't it ? This alone would account for the amount and type of crime....it is much more destructive than heroin ever was. It induces rage / violence and psychosis.
Don't know if consumption has gone up, but the price certainly has, dramatically, since the WOD in 2003.

It's unaffordable, with the price for just one pill more than a day's wage for ordinary folks.
Lots of it in Patters, where the price seems to be well above average.

I suspect the reported crimes in Patters are just the tip of the iceberg - how many holidaymakers don't report petty theft, fraud etc. because they feel insecure or don't want the hassle?

"pseudo experts"? Bit loaded that to be honest. I have been here and working for 16 years. Does that still put me in the "pseudo expert" category? Or can it be assumed that I might have some idea of what I am talking about?
I believe that a long and quite varied situational experience and exposure can speak volumes as opposed to those who limit and "shelter" themselves, therefore restricting the general perspectives and observations, less real everyday interaction with a wide variety of experiences -

We know the specimens. Those that have resided here forever, usually checking their interaction, experiences, and ventures toward the local world......pretending to know, but still almost always know fuck all from their bubble.

And then those whom have lived here forever seemingly gone native, as it were, with a much much wider pool of real exposure and experiences [not the fake Farang's measurement of this] who don't have to say much, as their considerations and variable perspectives bring fault to the sheltered and faux old-hands......whom continue to believe they know it all behind their protected existence.

The perception among some Thais. And just like many English, who routinely mis-perceive trends in crime, they can be wrong.

no figures for grievous bodily harm or manslaughter.

the figures for murder are specifically labelled intentional murder, which i assume means homicide.

foreigners are rarely actually targetted and murdered, but are sometimes victims of violent assault resulting in death.

(compare the thai figure of nearly 5000 homicides excluding manslaughter in thailand in 2013 with the 600 homicides including manslaughter for 2015 in the uk, a country with a roughly similar population.)
And? That's exactly fuck all reason for thinking that foreigners face a greater risk of violence now than they did a decade ago.

It's of course quite possible that the police figures are bullshit. Data collection generally seems to be pretty awful in Thailand and there are obvious motivations for massaging the figures but if you want to make grand claims about national trends, you need to have a bit more than 'Well, my neighbour reckons...' or 'A couple of blokes I know got mugged last week so....'.
I don't go much on figures as most get bent to fit someone's agenda, l would say in Khon Kaen there is a increase of attacks on westerners in the last two years. Even the wife has been appalled by increase of violence and stupidity of her fellow Thais.
As for over the last decade l believe there has been a increase across Thailand, l am sure many that lead a sheltered life most likely haven't noticed anything but those that are social butterfly's and get out and about would have witness evens or had someone in their social circles robbed, beaten, threatened, scammed ???
I can think of over 6 just of the top of my head within our circle of friends in the last 12 to 24 months. Yet the first 10 years l lived in Thailand, Phuket, Bangkok. I don't recall anyone in our circle being attacked, robbed, threatened

Maybe just because you were younger, less vulnerable and looked less wealthy?

Posters commenting on how things have changed with their personal experience seem to be viewing a crook's perspective on them as being a constant.

All of us over 40s look to varying degrees a better target than we did 20 or possibly even 5 years ago.

I speak as someone possibly on the verge of losing height.

I've been on the darkside for about 12 years. When I first moved here I was warned not to ride my moped at night as 'bandits' would fix chains between trees to pull riders off.

I hear that used to happen but I can't say I've heard of it since I've been here.

    Progress?
I would post pictures but life's too short.

If you've been here for quite a time and still consciously consider yourself a foreign entity, than you've lost.........and never will get it.

For whatever it's worth, up here we have no gate, no fence, and we don't even close the windows or lock the doors when we go out. Certainly not like Pattaya, or most of the West for that matter. I would not even know how to lock this place up, that's the truth. And I leave the keys in the car I drive locally, although it is an old jalopy.

It's not about being lost, it's about adjusting yourself.

The reason people have employed me here is all about the fact I am not Thai, can speak the language reasonably well and can offer transfer of knowledge when others cannot.

Having said that they hope that transfer of knowledge can be be as quick as possible so they can eradicate me from their financial system with all transfers being now the property of their system and as cheap as possible.

I have the knack to short change them about a few issues as normally my name is on the patent application along with them.

    Stupid fuckers...............cheating bastards..............

.....as most wouldn't begin to understand this way of life and reasonably siwilai locale. More common than not.

Stop contradicting the agenda that most have invented for themselves, Sab.

Our rented house was burgled when we lived in Land and House in Nong Prue.

We don't keep anything really valuable at home, but my wife used to be a nurse and some of her ex-patients gave her amulets which she valued.

Also some amulets from families whose loved ones couldn't thank her in person.

Oh, my dad had sent me a hundred bucks for my birthday too.

Probably worth a week of yaa baa to whoever nicked them.

This shit happens in all countries. I think it works quite well that so much of Thailand's Thai and Farang scum are coralled into Pattaya, Phuket and Samui.

"Rigger" sent me a red regarding my comments just above with the message 'No. Retard crime has increased'.

    I rest my case.

I mean, wtf does that mean?

Sorry to hear about your wife's loss.

Formally Thai's would never steal such religious personal property but these days some do not give a fuck. Not all of them but a few.

People are losing their religion here and it is so sad.

    This was 16 years ago.

But thank you for your sympathy.

I have to add though LT...it's an old old thing, petty and serious crime in the tiny part of Thailand where you have made your home.

    Good night...and Good luck.
