In my mind there are two types of degree; the professional degree and the slacker degree.
Professional degrees include, Doctors, Lawyers, Architects, Vets, the Sciences and so on.
Slackers degrees include, Sociology, Art, Teaching, and things like that.
Most of my mates who went to uni learnt about big debts, drugs and getting laid.
I was educated with a banana and a bicycle pump.
The fact is life and work are competitive. I think when I went to Uni only about 5% of school leavers were going into tertiary education so it was a big plus to have a degree. Now the number is about 50% so everyone has a degree but you're stuffed if you don't as you can't get your foot in the door for well paying jobs.
^ so what about a scientist with a teaching degree?
slacker or no??
Degree, or no degree. All corporate culture is ruled by the Peter Principle, which states:-
Everybody gets promoted to their own level of incompetence.
I think all Aussies enter the slacker category, so I wouldn't bother trying to split hairs mate.Originally Posted by mrT
True - a degree is proof that you have reached a certain level in education. You can be educated without having received a degree, but the opposite is rather difficult. Now whether the education is useful or relevant, that is another matter all together.
I guess that is exactly how people with degrees feel when they are told by non-degree holders that their education was a waste of time.
Besides, getting a degree is indeed an achievement. And I think you would need to have one to be qualified to state an opinion on the subject.
Horse manure - a degree proves that a person is educated and qualified to a certain extent. It also proves that he or she has the ability to retain knowledge. It doesn't mean the degree holder knows everything (or even a lot), but it serves as a basis for learning more, usually through work experience.
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...
Arrogance again. Going to school four years and getting a piece of paper is no guarantee teh recipient achieve anything more than going to school. People that tend to think having a degree is proof of a something tend be among the slackers and under-achievers you need to wade through to find someone worth hiring.Originally Posted by Whiteshiva
Wresting applicable knowledge out of whatever manner of education you have and applying it is an achievement. Post grad work? Writing a thesis? Achievement.
And this? Complete poppycock.Originally Posted by Whiteshiva

boring bastards actually.
speak in tongues, sit on there arse counting beans but real smart with computers.
give me somone who has spent his life travelling and interacting with real people, schooled in the way of life.
Perhaps it's difficult for non-degree-holders to establish what the opposite of "You can be educated without having received a degree" is?Originally Posted by friscofrankie
I qualified as a translator/interpreter.
The diploma is only proof that you've put in the required number of hours of study and passed the exam.
After that, you start to learn the real requirements of the job.
The diploma says nothing about your practical proficiency, special interpreting abilities like speed and intuition or the their influence on the results you turn in.
And you have to practice daily like a musician or athlete so as not to lose your edge.
IMO, the piece of paper is worthless in terms of judging your real ability.
Slimboy was not being entirely honest about his degree......
^ that'd be right!
Actually I think you are the one displaying arrogance (and heaps of ignorance) here, thinking that people who lack education or degrees are somehow superior to those who have taken the time to study. Some people with degrees may look down upon those who do not have any, but the great majority do not.
And the majority of slackers and under-achievers I have met have not taken higher education. That is not saying that their lack of education is the reason for these guys being losers, it is rather the effect.
Let me summon up my take on this subject:
1) Losers do not get degrees (simply because they are losers, and not the other way around)
2) Lots of people who do not get degrees are clever, knowledgeble, hard working and successful at what they are doing.
3) Getting a degree is no guarantee of success, although it may certainly improve your odds.
So chill out FF, and stop being so hard on yourself!
I passed with honors at the school of hard knocks the greatest education anyone can have
You don't need a degree to be successful, you need hunger, drive and ambition and that is something you can't be taught.I have a degree but have never done any work in that field, The fact that I have a degree has maybe given people who I have dealt with a little more confidence in me, maybe not.
Is this arguement about education or class divide? some people with degrees tend to think that they fill a more important role in society.
I have done a 180 degree many a time...
