Local coffee for me, as there is quite a variety grown in Thailand now -
Black or with a hint of heavy cream.....sugar? Fuck no!

Can't find real local coffee, I'll go with Nescafe Gold.

You'll find that those whom consider instant to be real coffee cannot decipher the real varieties and qualities that are available......and the real difference between a true product and a manufactured one.

Probably how they see their tea as well - common Darjeeling varieties, thinking they're the height of sophistication.

    Charlatans.

It only matters to the individual who is drinking it. Instant or hi so is irrelevant.

You pointing out that we are all heathens does not affect my preferences or anyone elses for that matter. The OP has established his brand awareness and his choice. End of debate.

It is opiniinated mugs who give this forum such a bad name.
Ialways feel better to know that my pilot has inhaled steam infused caffeine a line of coke and mirth control pill before coming into my cabin to join the smile high club, as others have noted booty is the lie of the behooves me.As for chuck samui and his baseless assertions he should stick up a civet and wauit 3 days.

Nige it's a scandalous rip off!

I could never bear to part a few quid for a cup of coffee, jeez it's more expensive than a pint of beer!
I fear most like to be seen with the cardboard cup as if it's some sort of fashion accessary.
I'll have a couple of decent cups in the morning, total cost about 5 pence each with milk and sugar(i live the dream).
If you do feel the urge for a bargain take away coffee and you like a pasty, try Greggs only £2 meal deal bargain.
If you hang around at 5 pm around the back they sling all the leftover cakes, pasties, bread etc in the bin.
I'd recommend getting there about 4 pm to make sure your first in the queue.
    Top tip!

I miss the tea houses myself,,,,although there are still a few around, they don't have the cake trolleys that were full of such delicious delicacies that turned bad days into good ones in an instant.

I don't like drinking tea or coffee out of paper cups any more than beer out of plastic glasses and have never bought a coffee in any of the modern coffee houses purely because I can't afford the extravagance of wasting good money on such rubbish.

If there is one thing the wife will say is typical English, it is tea in real cups with a selection of cakes...she loves visiting Dad for what is still a real treat.

I bet he has , ,my Dad used to park his 350cc Velocete outside the corner one on George Street in Croydon ,, no doubt he would be smoking a Players fag of some kind , not sure what he smoked then but smoked Gold Leaf later on .

Would have smoked inside in them days for sure

I used to love Lyons individual fruit pies especially the blackcurrant ones

Look at that little beauty , rammed full of fruit and just 2d in old money a nice size they were to about 4" square I would guess ,, unlike that sugar packed shit you get in the pies today

I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs

    Ahhh the good old days

Vile. You would have encountered them in railway buffet cars, their natural habitat:

A favourite of British Transport Catering on account of their high levels of glucose syrup, sugar, and fat. All of which made them unattractive for colonisation by moulds, fungi, or bacteria and thus returned a long shelf life. Just right for bumping around the country in the pantry for days on end over the course of a few thousand miles.

Even if they were so compromised, it was unlikely any customer would complain. Like all factory food, it was generally accepted these tasted nothing like any fruit (or pastry) with which a comparison could fairly be drawn.
I remember the individual fruit pies, too - though I must say I was never a fan. I thought their flavour was rather like I'd imagine the cardboard packaging to taste!

I drink instant coffee at home, one cup a day first thing in the morning and that is my total coffee intake. I'll agree with anyone who says the regular Nescafe is shit and the regular gold blend only slightly less shit, but my poison is the Nescafe Barista gold blend which is the best instant I've come across and hence been drinking it for a while now, the difference between the barista and the normal shit is like comparing chalk and cheese.

Prince Charles has never made a secret of his love affair with alternative medicine. Now he has infuriated the medical profession by backing a controversial cancer treatment which involves taking daily coffee enemas .

Next time you beverage aficionados are enjoying you $4-6 cups ..spare a thought for the less than a dollar a day growers and pickers..

Me I like most coffee...be it instant or ..Wet and warm is good.
My favourite is Bangkok street vendor coffee fresh filtered through a rag filter. As for Starbucks et al nah.. Once owned a $1.50 coffee and muffin shop in Canada...could have made good money except for the rent and taxes.

Chass has told us to stop talking on a discussion forum again. Thinks. He doesn't understand what web forums are for.

However, it is pertinent. Nigel is asking why people spend a lot of money on real coffee, when he can drink by the gallon as teaspoon of mud in water for peanuts.

    as shown here

I have never understood why people pay so much money for this crap

This is around £2 - £2.50p per cup of basic coffee in these places Starbucks , Nero , Costa etc
He seems to be under the illusion that in trash places like starbucks, or even proper coffee shops, they are using instant there and charging a couple of quid plus for it. If they were, they would have no customers at all.

Instant coffee is made by brewing the bejesus out of beans, usually the cheapest crud beans there is, and then spraying it through an evaporator. This process burns the coffee to the point where all flavour and taste of the coffee has gone and replaced with a product that taste vaguely of coffee but mostly of burnt vegetable matter. The other method is freeze drying it, where the ground coffee beans have the bejesus boiled out of them, which burns it, and then this is compounded by freeze drying which bruises the coffee creating a heinous taste to anyone who actually likes coffee. A lot of the flavour of coffee comes from the oils in the coffee. Evaporating it burns the oil to nothing, and freeze drying separates the oils from the water flavoured coffee due to different freezing points, and it is generally lost.

The poundland versions etc, and the vast majority of mass produced powered or granulated instant coffee is made with robusta beans, which are the cheapest nastiest and easiest to grow beans in the world. I compared it to bistow (gravy granules) because put side by side in a cup, not many people could tell the difference as they both are the same, and taste mostly of burnt carbohydrates. The only reason it is slightly palatable is because it has been burnt beyond recognition and you can not actually taste the horror that is robusta.

So mr pompous leader of the board, I think you will find that my, and others, responses were right at the heart of the discussion point, but there again, you think that McDonalds coffee is nice, so your credibility is lost from the off. So wind your neck in telling people what they can and can not post.

Nigel - Excluding the places like Starbucks which all use generic coffee blends so that more people like, not love, their taste, people who actually like coffee rather than instant coffee will pay the price they need to pay for the drink they want. Instant and fresh coffee are two completely different drinks - it's like comparing fresh milk and milk made from powdered milk. Both milk, but one is fresh and lovely and the other is a weird tasting substance called milk that doesn't taste like milk.

^ Well said Sir, well said.

If people cannot tell the difference, fine. You can save yourself a fair bit of money.

But to pretend there IS no difference is utter hogwash.

Er yes it is in the lounge so I guess discussion is still allowed in here and interesting bits have turned up .

Like someone posting up a picture of my old residence , not such a big world is it?

I don't think I was ever stating the like of Costa using instant coffee , however its my belief a cup of say Kenco + a drop of coffee mate tastes better than that stewed shit in Costa that people seem to get caught up in the " must have a coffee at Costa hype "

I'm sure all our taste buds are different , mine are probably shot by now so a cup of black coffee derived from Poundland at little over 1p per cup suffices .

On this coming Sunday at Brands Hatch I shall be queuing up with all the other numpties to buy the wife a couple of cups of hot instant at £2 a throw , while my black coffee will be coming out my work flask
