9 China-Russia surface ships in Mediterranean waters for drills

    May 12, 2015, 5:26 am
    Xinhua nws agency
China held joint naval drills with Russia on Monday in the southern Russian port city of Novorossiysk.
Chinese President Xi Jinping was in Moscow during the weekend to attend a parade celebrating the end of World War Two.

China and Russia have held naval drills in Pacific waters since 2012. The May maneuvers come for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea.

Military officials from both sides attended a ceremony to mark the beginning of the “Joint Sea-2015″ drills, the fourth since joint China-Russia sea drills began.

The drills slated for May 11-21, include navigation safety, at-sea replenishment, escort missions and live fire exercises.

The exercises, involving nine surface ships from both navies, are to be staged in four phases, focusing on maritime security threats.

The two sides will prepare detailed arrangements for the drills later in the day, and the ships are expected to leave Novorossiysk for waters in the Mediterranean on Tuesday.

“The joint drills are not aimed at any third party and have nothing to do with the political situation in that region,” a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said.

Last month, US President Barack Obama had accused China of “flexing its muscles” to advance its territorial claims at sea.

Geng Yansheng, a spokesman for the Chinese Defense Ministry, said earlier on Monday that the joint drills “will deepen friendly and pragmatic cooperation between China and Russia, and boost response operation capabilities in the event of security threats at sea”.

Fan Changlong, vice chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, had said while holding talks with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in Moscow that China will work with Russia to deepen “pragmatic military cooperation”.

China and Russia are both permanent members of the UN Security Council and have close economic and military ties

Is there a reason you wanted to post a 4 month old article, David?

Is it to highlight the shifting, by Russia and China, of the Black Sea into the Mediterranean Sea without anyone noticing?

Or did those pesky Ruskies move the southern Russian port city of Novorossiysk into the Med?

Or have I missed something obvious?

Al-Masdar Al-‘Arabi, The Arab Source, claims a Chinese naval vessel passed through the Suez Canal on Tuesday and is headed to Syria to assist the Russians fight the Islamic State and US and Gulf Emirate proxies trying to overthrow the al-Assad government.

The website cites an senior officer in the Syrian Army stationed at Latakia who claims Chinese troops and military aircraft will arrive at the port city of Tartus within six weeks.

Russia’s only Mediterranean naval facility is located at Tartus, the second largest Syrian city.

Here's the link to almasdar news and the claim: Chinese Military Personnel Expected to Arrive in Syria

BY LEITH FADEL ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2015

On Tuesday morning, a Chinese naval vessel reportedly traveled through Egypt’s Suez Canal to enter the Mediterranean Sea; its destination was not confirmed.

However, according to a senior officer in the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) that is stationed inside the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, Chinese military personnel and aerial assets are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks (6 weeks) to the port-city of Tartous – he could not provide anymore detail.

I don't know about the quality of the almasdar news website but it's interesting that there are a few "interesting" stories now being reported on that site and others. One is that Russian jets pounded IS in East Aleppo (al-masdar), and another is that British SAS troops entered Syria and took out 8 IS jihadis (express.co.uk).

Russian navy to conduct drills near Israel
Days after Netanyahu meets Putin in Moscow, Russia's Defense Ministry announces it plans to conduct naval exercises in the "east Mediterranean".

Russia's Defense Ministry on Thursday said it will hold naval drills in the "east Mediterranean" in September and October, as the West frets over a military buildup by Moscow in Syria.

The exercises include three warships from Russia's Black Sea Fleet, including the Saratov landing ship, the Moskva guided missile cruiser and the Smetlivy destroyer, the ministry said in a statement.

Chinese Military Advisors Expected to Join the Russians in Syria 1
BY LEITH FADEL ON SEPTEMBER 27, 2015 FEATURED
Last month, the Syrian civilians living in the government-controlled parts of Syria had little be optimistic about: the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was spread too thin and on the defensive at most fronts, while the humanitarian crisis inside the country spread to the provinces that were once relatively unaffected by the violence (i.e. Al-Sweida).

Well, “hope springs eternal” when hundreds of Russian Marines and dozens of Russian jets enter your country; this was the case in the overcrowded provinces of Latakia and Tartous, as large crowds gathered near the coast to welcome these Russian naval infantrymen and their advanced military hardware.

Those previously depressed civilians in the government-controlled part of Syria are now oozing with optimism, thanks in large part to the recent news of China’s military partnership with their Russian allies.

Earlier this week, a Chinese naval vessel crossed through Egypt’s Suez Canal and entered the Mediterranean Sea; its destination was unknown, but that did not make a difference to the Syrian people because the news circulating around the country indicated that China’s participation in this brutal conflict was imminent.

According to a senior officer in the Syrian Arab Army that is stationed inside the coastal province of Latakia, “the Chinese will be arriving in the coming weeks.”

When asked to elaborate, the officer responded that Chinese military personnel were expected to join the Russians Marines stationed around Syria’s western countryside.

The officer could not provide anymore details regarding their deployment; however, he did state that the Chinese military personnel were expected to arrive at Tartous’ ports in the next six weeks.

I doubt real time sensitive stuff is being leaked as often since the Wikileaks fiasco.

Meanwhile there's always good news to announce, maybe.
The reality of Russian and Chinese ethnic snipers chasing their Chechen and Uighur enemies ups the ante and room for direct confrontation.

You missed the satellite photos of Russia's invasion of the Ukraine, Russia's invasion of Syria and the world wide blaming of the Malaysian aircraft crash in Ukraine on Russia? They were released within hours/days.

Whereas any evidence of the crusader coalition "successful war on terror" seems to be hidden behind the "operational info is top secret" label.
