Cream with Butter - Coffee boosts Energy and Weightloss

Can BUTTER coffee give you more energy? The unlikely morning brew that claims to 'shrink waistlines' and 'promote brain function'

    By Margot Peppers

A new craze is seeing coffee-drinkers blending their morning brew with up to 80 grams (two-thirds of a stick) of butter, in a bid to boost energy levels and promote weight loss.

David Asprey, the creator of Bulletproof Coffee, claims that this concoction is full of healthy fats that will keep your energy levels up 'for six hours if you need it', as well as 'improving cognitive function' and 'shrinking your waistline'.
But some health experts, like Today diet and nutrition editor Madelyn Fernstrom, say the blend - which contains between 100 and 200 calories a cup - can actually promote weight gain, and that any extra energy experienced by drinkers is merely a placebo effect.

The new breakfast smoothie? 'Bulletproof' coffee is an 'energy-boosting' blend of coffee beans and unsalted butter - but some health experts say it may actually promote weight gain, not loss

Mr Asprey says he discovered the power of butter-blended drinks on the top of Mt Kailash in Tibet, at 18,000 feet elevation.
'I staggered into a guest house from the -10 degree weather and was literally rejuvenated by a creamy cup of yak butter tea,' he recalls on his website.
He recreated the energy-boosting effects by mixing unsalted grass-fed butter with his trademark Upgraded Coffee - made from 'low-toxin beans' that make it 'cleaner' than Starbucks coffee.

According to Mr Asprey, butter contains 'all the benefits of healthy milk fat with none of the damaging denatured casein proteins found in cream,' making for 'the creamiest, most satisfying' cup of coffee.
The coffee also contains MCT oil - a blend of coconut and palm oil - which Mr Asprey says is digested faster than other fats and therefore boosts energy and promotes weight loss.
Those who follow a 'paleo' diet, which consists of mainly animal fats and protein, are fans of the coffee since it falls in with their high-fat regimen.

Diet trend: Bulletproof coffee, which also contains MCT oil (a combination of coconut and palm oil) is particularly popular among paleo diet fans, who consume mainly animal fats and protein

Indeed, blogger The Paleo Mama said she tried out the Bulletproof recipe and experienced a satisfying 'high performance buzz'.
Others have pointed out that adding a pat of butter to your morning brew is equivalent to mixing in a few spoonfuls of cream.
And while butter and coffee may sound like an unlikely combination, it has actually been consumed around the world for years.
    .
Origins: Founder Dave Asprey claims he discovered the rejuvenateing power of butter when Tibetans gave him yak butter tea

Aside from the Tibetans Mr Asprey encountered, who do indeed drink yak butter and tea at high altitudes, Ethiopians commonly add spiced butter into their coffee.
And in Singapore, coffee beans are often stir-fried with butter in a wok before being consumed.
But as far as health benefits are concerned, some experts disagree with Mr Asprey's findings.
According to Heart.org, butter is very high in saturated fat, an ingredient which raises the level of cholesterol in your blood and therefore increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Since Mr Asprey recommends mixing in as much as 80 grams of butter - or two-thirds of a stick - the brew is likely to contain a significant amount of saturated fat.

And in terms of taste, when Matt Lauer tried out the concoction on the Today show this morning, he appeared underwhelmed. 'It's terrible,' he said with a look of revulsion.

Still, Mr Asprey and his believers insist that the side effects of drinking butter-infused coffee are solely positive.
'Aside from tasting awesome, it makes you feel lean, focused, and energized,' he promises.
'It allows you to transform your diet without resorting to chewing on sticks of butter (though that's not a bad idea…).'

Would it be a fair comment to say that going for a nice walk could promote weight loss and save yourself the cost of a cup of coffee at the same time ?

All these weight loss programs that consist off this sort of bolloks are presented for the fat lazy morons amongst us.

Millions of them by the way.

he got the idea from tibet, where they drink a lot of butter tea - coz they are poor, and it seems to be indeed quite nutritious and it warms the body up - so it apparently DOES speed up metabolism...

Poor people in third world countries eat as much fat as possible when it's available

They dont have access to the same balanced diet found in more developed countries and need the calories that fats give them

Any good? Probably not if you only had it the once.

There has been a change in thought with regards to eating low fat diets to reduce body fat.
The new thing is to teach the body to burn fat as fuel by supplying it with readily digestible healthy fats.

MCT's found in coconut oil are espoused as being particularly good for you, but coconut oil is thought of as a panacea by some. It also contains lauric acid which is found in breast milk. Its supposed to boost your immune system as well.

I think the important thing is to replace the calories you would have eaten with it, instead of adding it to your daily quota. Stands to reason you would gain fat if you are consuming an extra 200 to 300 calories a day by drinking fats.

The bulletproof coffee is supposed to be taken as part of an intermittent fasting diet, in which you only have the coffee until mid afternoon, after which you eat.

Seems a bit extreme, but there are plenty of people claiming that it has worked for them. I haven't tried it myself, though i have tried coconut oil, but i don't think we can dismiss it out of hand.

If any further convincing was required to keep some in the house, both butter and coconut oil can both be used as lube in a pinch.

Listening to an old soldier the other day, he sniffed when asked about arctic survival and said once you get taught about eating butter - you're never cold.

It's old as time itself for people that live in cold places.

Sometimes just a pinch will do...

And, yeah, the cheddar was not bad...turned into a slightly melted chunk to chew on, but I wouldn't say it was much of a thrill...and it was useless as lube...heh...

Can BUTTER coffee give you more energy? Of course it can. Butter has a very high fat content and there are 9 calories per gram of fat. Adding fat is adding calories. More calories = more energy.

Between 100 and 200 calories a cup? Not with 80g of butter. 80g of butter will give you about 600 calories. You'd need to use less than an ounce of butter to keep it under 200 calories. And not add milk or sugar. I'd rather drink a butterless cup of coffee and eat a cheese sandwich.

Throw some minced beef and chilli in there and you could open a mexican style coffee burrito chain. Gap in the market there.

Cheddar is probably not the best cheese to use for lube. Knob cheese in sufficient quantities is much better... Im told.

Butter would be even better. I might try to download Last Tango in Paris after this.

The article in the OP does say they use up to 80g of butter in a cup, but i believe most people only add a teaspoon or two.
You are quite right, they take it without milk and sugar. In fact as part of the diet they abstain from sugar so the body will predominantly use dietary fats as fuel.

For them that also rules out a cheese sandwich, as the body would prefer to use the carbs in the bread as fuel.

Sounds a pain in the arse to me, but an interesting theory. I buy decent coffee because i want to taste it and the thought of spooning butter into it just doesn't sit with me.

Speaking of pains in the arse, has anyone got a torrent for Last Tango in Paris?

    Yep.
    Suckers and Morons.

All the while, the weightloss/energy/alternative health and diet is a multi-billion dollar business.

A smidgen of reasoned sense is all that is required.

Look at our past. Healthy fats have always been the way to go and much more healthier. This low fat and diet trend has actually had a reverse effect because these foods cannot provide satiety. McDonalds is a typical example of a bad food type. How many actually feel full for a period of time after eating junk food?

As for coffee I can't speak for this product. But I drink between 5 and 7 cups a day and I eat less because of it. But when I do eat I use full fat products from organic milk to real butter. And I'm an Adonis of a man.

    Coffee can have negative effects

    Something on coffee...

How Too Much Coffee Can Kill You - Business Insider

People under 55 who drink an average of more than than four cups of coffee a day raise the risk of dying from all causes, according to a study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Researchers led by Steven Blair at the University of South Carolina found that people aged under 55 who drank more than 28 cups a week saw a 56% increase in death from all causes.

The study analyzed medical and personal history questionnaires filled out by a total of 43,727 participants (33,900 men and 9,827 women) aged 20 to 87 between 1979 and 1998.

After a typical follow-up period of 17 years, more than 2,500 participants had died.
Xuemei Sui, a co-author on the study, noted that the "exact mechanism between coffee and mortality still needs clarification" but noted that coffee has the potential to "stimulate the release of epinephrine, inhibit insulin activity, and increase blood pressure."

Sui added that related vices, such as heavy drinking, may play a part.
"Heavy coffee consumption behavior might cluster with other unhealthy behaviors such as sleeping late, and eating a poor diet," Sui said in a statement.

Joseph Jebelli of The Guardian notes the study found that those who drank larger amounts of coffee were more likely to smoke and had less healthy lungs and hearts.

The study concluded: "On the basis of these findings, it seems appropriate to suggest that younger people avoid heavy coffee consumption (ie, averaging >4 cups per day). However, this finding should be assessed in future studies of other populations."

this is imo a typical example of how stupied they are and how dim-witted they do their researches...

when people drink so much coffee they might do that because they feel they "need" it, it does "help" them...
    same accounts for smoking/drinking...

a lot of these people do have some condition, what makes them highly attracted to coffee/nicotine/andwhatever , much more than people without that condition...

so, its not unlikely, that they had died even EARLIER without the coffee...

it might be particularly the reason, that it stimulates insulin and increases blood pressure, why these people drink coffee...

not sure, what the b.s. is about blood pressure, not everyone has an overly high one...

how many of very obese people (that fancy sugary food/drinks - doesnt mean chocolate) are passionate coffee consumers ?

if you have a very high b.p. then probably you wont like drinking coffee...
we eat/like/drink what does do "good" to us...
so, from this viewpoint you have to roll-out the research...
    but... hey...
