Thread: Lively start to Thailand Sixes

The inaugural Thailand International Cricket Sixes Tournament got off to a great start at the excellent facilities provided by Harrow International School yesterday.

Even the weather played its part by providing a pleasant breeze across the ground.

Yesterday's 14 group games were to decide which trophies the sides will play for today.

Proceedings got underway with a new side to the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour, The Rough Edged Gents from Pattaya, playing host club Southerners Gold. The home side who have done so much to make the staging of the event possible, posted 1/85 with the debutants scoring 2/36 in reply.

Etihad Airways were restricted to 1/63 by Jakarta Rebels with Sankat Nayak retiring on 30. The Indonesian outfit lost by 19 runs, losing 3 wickets in the process.

Old favourites, the Bounty Buccaneers of Malaysia struggled to 3/26 chasing Southerners Black target of 0/80 in which Johnny Giuffrida starred with 30 not out.

Next up saw a titanic battle between Shanghai Dragons and international tourists, the CBB SC's. Chasing the CBB's 3/58, with Saurav Chatterjee's retirement being the star performance, the Dragons fell 7 runs short despite not losing a wicket and Sanjay Anagula striking 31 not out. The Rough Edged Gents scored 0/52 against the CBB Postels with Lee Keohane starring with 21 not out. It wasn't enough as the total was passed without any loss.

The match of the day saw Etihad pass Southerners Gold 2/42 from the last ball with 3 runs required. The visiting bat hit a six.

Rob Bernard's retirement took the CBB SK's to 0/52 but it was in vain as Lee Kennedy's 29 not out saw the Bounty Buccaneers home. Sanjay Anagula's second retirement of the day saw the Shanghai Dragons to 3/79 with the Southerners Black falling 20 runs short.

Robbie Whiteman hammered 34 not out for Jakarta Rebels in their 0/88 against SBB Postels who replied with 3/43. Etihad then gave a batting exhibition against Rough Edged Gents posting 2/103 with Sankat Nayak and Sohail Khan both retiring. The Gents scored 2/24.

CBB SK's scored 1/42 against their close friends and rivals, the CBB SC's. Jake Miller's 22 not out helped his side home for the loss of just one wicket.

Today will see the remainder of the group matches, before the semi-finals and final kick off just after lunch. Play begins at 8.45am and spectators are welcome to watch the event. Admission is free.

Action from the final day of the competition on Sunday.



Sunday saw the conclusion to the inaugural Thailand International Cricket Sixes, and what a dramatic day it was.

The scriptwriters could not have made up a better ending for the organisers, the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour in conjunction with Southerners CC of Bangkok.

Teams returned from a well-deserved rest at The Chaophya Park Hotel to a damp Harrow International School ground to complete the preliminary games.

Saturday's late games saw Shanghai Dragons post 1/110 (Jon Newton 31*) against Bounty Buccaneers 2/26. Richard Oster recorded his second retirement of the day for Southerners Gold who ended up with 0-87 against Jakarta Rebels 2/46. CBB SC's scored 2/81 with Saurav Chattergee starring with 30* opposed to Southerners Black's 52 to bring proceedings to an end for the day.

On Sunday morning CBB Postels could only muster 2/33 against Southerners Gold who knocked off the target without loss. CBB SK's (3/20) didn't fare any better chasing Shanghai's 0/83 for whom Jon Newton hammered another undefeated innings.

CBB SC's 0/72 consisted of a fine Mark Woods knock while the Bounty Buccs could only reply with 4/26.

Etihad Airways made hard work of chasing down the CBB Postels 1/44, finally reaching their target with two balls to spare.

Jakarta only just overcame the Rough Edged Gents before a real nail biter, and indeed shock ended the prelims. When Southerners Black reached 5/53, it appeared to be game over against winless CBB SK's. However, how wrong could the aficionados be? Cathy Gavin had taken a wicket before her husband Carl, smashed a retirement. It was then left to CBB stalwart, Swiss Cyrus Maybud to hit the winning runs with a ball to spare.

The semi-finals of the Plate saw CBB SK's 1/44 fell well short of Jakarta's 1/65 while CBB Postels 2/43 was never going to be enough to trouble Southerners Black.

The Cup semis produced cricket of the highest quality. Southerners Gold's 2/66 looked as though it was going to be too many for CBB SC's until one superb over of hitting from old stager Ian Liddell turned the tide. The winning runs were scored from the last ball.

Shanghai's 0/68 consisted of another great knock from Sanjay Anagula against Etihad and it looked like it was going to be enough. However, amazing knocks from Sanket Nayak and Azam Qazi saw the Abu Dhabi based outfit home with a ball to spare.

The Bowl Final saw the Rough Edged Gents defeat the Bounty Buccaneers by 22 runs to lift silverware at the first attempt. Lee Keohane contributed 21 but Stuart Tasker took the man of the match award with 31*.

Southerners Black lifted the Plate title chasing down the spirited Rebels target of 4/49 with just two balls remaining. Jakarta were severely hampered by a bad injury to Robbie Whiteman who battled on to the end. The hosts' Jay Lamey took the man of the match accolades for his 31 not out.

The best was yet to come as the Cup Final was a brilliant advert for the tournament and sixes cricket. In a vibrant atmosphere CBB SC's 2/70 (made up of some monster hits from Saurav Chattergee and Imran Indrees) was always going to be a stiff target for Etihad in fading light. With an over to go they still needed 16 which they reduced to 9 from two balls. Azam Qazi hit a six before two were scrambled from the last ball leaving the scores level.

The tension mounted before ACST Chairman, Michael "Cat" Maher declared Etihad the winners on virtue of losing fewer wickets in the game. Sankat Nayak was man of the match.

The presentations, which also saw Southerners Gold, Richard Oster named as Player of the Tournament, brought the hugely successful event to a close.

Sounds like a good do, pity not more teams from Thailand were in it. I guess we are just too stingy to stump up the cash!

"Jesus wept," I didn't know it was that much. We thought that 50,000 baht for a week at the Chiang Mai Sixes was OTT. That's just for 2 days!

The budget for the whole CMCC 20/20 Tournament wasn't much more than that. Did every player get a pair of twins with beer flavoured nipples or something?
