Ben Stokes faces Ashes axe as video emerges of fight in Bristol

Ben Stokes is facing a suspension by the England management that could end his Ashes tour after the emergence of video footage
believed to be of a fight outside a Bristol nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning that led to his arrest.

Before the game Trevor Bayliss, the head coach, described the players behaviour as “very unprofessional” for being out until 2.35am

Stokes was later arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm and released under police investigation.
Hales was called to Bristol on Tuesday and interviewed by police.

Sources claim Stokes was acting out of self defence ...

Plans to stop rain delays at cricket matches by covering pitches with a giant mesh tent are being discussed by the sport's governing bodies.
The Telegraph says an American company has approached the MCC and the English Cricket Board (ECB) with the idea.
The transparent mesh could be held up by wires attached to floodlights and a hot-air balloon in the centre.
An ECB spokesman told the BBC they were looking into "new technologies" but did not confirm any specific plans.
But the new MCC chief executive Guy Lavender says they are in conversation with ECB chief executive Tom Harrison in how they can partner up on the research.
Testing is at a very early stage and the technology is believed to be at least two years away from becoming a reality, with issues such as safety in high winds and water run-off to be considered.

Surely it would be cheaper simply to provide the players with snorkels and flippers.

Ben Stokes won't travel to Australia with England's Ashes squad pending street brawl investigation

Controversial England all-rounder Ben Stokes will stay at home as the rest of the squad travels to Australia for this summer's
Ashes series, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has announced.

The 26-year-old Stokes, England's vice captain and one of their most important players, was suspended after he and teammate
Alex Hales were arrested following a punch-up outside a Bristol nightclub last month and released under investigation.

Pace bowler Steven Finn has been added to the Ashes squad and will travel to Australia with the rest of the team on October 28,
the ECB said in a statement on its website.

The ECB said no final decision had been made on Stokes' participation in the Test series in Australia.

The five-Test series starts in Brisbane on November 23.

Ben Stokes is an entertainer. If he was a rock star earning 10 x his cricket salary, the media reporting would be much less savage.
Yes I realize he is a role model for young people, but that should not mean living like a hermit to keep the media happy.

The bloke who got biffed probably wound the ginger up for exactly this kind of response. His 15 minutes of infamy.

The police have cleared Hales, so why are they taking so long with Stokes?

England's under-fire all-rounder Ben Stokes has apologised to TV personality Katie Price and her son Harvey for a video
that appeared to show him mocking the disabled boy.

Stokes also found out on Wednesday that his sponsorship agreement with sportswear manufacturer New Balance had been terminated.

"New Balance does not condone behaviour by our global athletes that does not match our brand culture and values, and therefore
we have ended our relationship with Ben Stokes, effective October 11, 2017," the American company said in a statement.
Stokes, 26, had not previously spoken publicly since he was arrested following a night out after England beat West Indies in the third one-day international.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said last week that Stokes would not travel to Australia on October 28 with the Ashes squad but no
decision has been taken regarding his participation in the five-Test series which starts on November 23.

That Ginger Stokes really is a nasty piece of work isn’t he. Attacking nice everyday citizens and making fun of handicapped kids!
I wonder if he became so deranged because he was bullied as a kid because of his own handicap (( being ginger ))

    No Finn either.

Mark Wood being bang out of form is also badly timed.

Could be a long tour, as you'll probably do well against our second string.

Barby is obviously mentally deranged too. What’s been stopping him bowling like pidg up until now?

It amazes me how either of the Marsh brothers are selected and after their many failures.

Must because their Dad is a selector!

That rather ragbag selection has me worried that if Australia win at the GABBA it could be quite a narrow victory. A crushing Australian win is vastly preferable, since it will spark the usual Aussie tendency towards overconfidence.

Here's what the chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns has to say about these picks: "There have been a lot of under-performers, so we really didn't have anyone jumping out at us."

As rallying cries go that doesn't seem very clevor, Trever.

Surprise and anger from former Australia players and fans greeted reports that Tim Paine was to pip Peter Nevill to the wicketkeeper’s spot in Australia’s team for the first two Ashes Tests. Matt Renshaw, the 21-year-old opening batsman, is also due to be dropped from the squad who will be named in Brisbane at 10am on Friday local time (midnight Thursday UK time).

Nevill lost his place to Matthew Wade last year but was widely expected to win a recall after Wade struggled with the bat and gloves. Instead Paine, who did not even make Tasmania’s squad for the first two Sheffield Shield matches of the season is set to get the nod. Stuart MacGill, the former Test leg spinner, described the selectors as “morons masquerading as mentors”.

Paine is a fine wicketkeeper but has kept in only three Shield games in the past two years, while the 32-year-old’s only first‑class century came 11 years ago – Darren Lehmann, Australia’s coach, who played his last first-class game in November 2007, has a more recent one.

Paine is not expected to be the only surprise. Shaun Marsh is set to come into the side at No6, pipping Glenn Maxwell and Hilton Cartwright, who played in Australia’s last Test, in Chittagong in September. Cameron Bancroft, the Western Australia opener in the midst of a purple patch, is set to replace Middlesbrough-born Renshaw.

It looked set to be a selection that will please the tourists. Not only have Australia failed to offer themselves a fifth frontline bowling option but the top seven look shaky and untried.
