Best way to ease into jogging?

I've always been active when it comes to sport but in particular with racquet sports, playing tennis from the age of 6. I recently took up squash as it is quite hard to get a decent game of tennis, but my squash partner keeps busting his knee; and haven't played for 3 months.

So I'm thinking of jogging and wondered from those that jog, if any on here, have any tips for getting into it. I've always been shit at long distance running since school, yet I can play tennis for a good 4hrs, or run around on a footy pitch with no problems. I've bought a decent pair of running shoes so I'm ready to go. I'm up a 5am daily so my jogging will be in some amount of safety I hope.

    Cheers in advance.

Absolutely, and don't skimp on the quality, and if you are the average big foot farang buy New Balance....they have the widest last.

When you want to start try running a circuit of about 15 minutes nice and easy, too fast to be able to hold a steady conversation but not fast to enough to get exhausted. So run for 7.5 minutes then turn around and go home. DO NOT MEASURE THE DISTANCE...it doesn't matter.

Try that for a week...and you will find you are running further each time.

Then you can start extending it to a 20 minute circuit...and so on.

If you want to know who told me this...it was one of the greats of athletic coaching...but that doesn't matter.

I have been thinking about a good quality ellipitical trainer - less joint impact and minimal risk of dog bite

joint injury is probably the main reason older heavier joggers give up, I've got a good quality indoor exercise bike that I've been useing for a year now, I've worked up to 40 minutes a day and not once has a drunk car driver lost control and ploughed into me, best buy of the decad.

Pretty simple stuff is jogging, JJ.
As mentioned, start off walking briskly, then walk/jog, then jog.
Cycling and swimming are certainly easier on the joints but there's nothing like running. Also the joints are renewed (up to a point!) by a certain amount of impact.
I packed in squash years ago as it involves too many sudden twists and turns. Just listen to your body, and if knees and ankles are sore try the swimming or cycling for a week.

Personally I've found ASICS running shoes by far the best.

It depends on the individual foot.

Much easier...the only problem with swimming is all the chlorine one inhales...cycling inside is much safer...especially in Thailand

I played it for far too long... a terrible sport for farangs unless one is as skinny as a Pakistani...lots of heart attacks and stuffed knees.

If one is an East African...and I figured out I may as well jog on the spot behind a car exhaust...it was just as dangerous....downhills if one is not a lightweight is very harsh on the shins.

I have found the best way to ease into logging is to find a group and find out where they jog and sit and watch them for a few years , if you still want to subject yourself to torture, Next session I would suggest more beers while observing.

It's like asking for the "the best way to ease into electrodes on the genitals".

    Why would you?

I've found that with exercise equipment more than anything else you get what you pay for, I've bought cheap before and it was money down the drain. Spend big Balders or buy twice.

Don't knock what you haven't tried. And, in case you're tempted, those dimmer switches which were popular in the 70s can be very useful.

Nah what he needs is the Electrocizer with cushioned pads, you the ones with gel impregnated into them to conduct the stimulating jolts more effectively

JJ, it all depends on the person, the fitness level and how your body reacts but to start off, do as Barrylad66 or Bruce Bayliss said: Start off with run, walk, run walk until you are fit enough to jog continuously, or if you can run continuously already, run/jog continuously for a set period of time (or distance) and gradually increase the distance or time. When using time I've used an extra minute each way on an out and back route. For increases in distance, I've used 200m further on the same out and back route or 400m on a circular route. I usually increase the load (time or distance) weekly. The body needs time to adapt to the new load (7 to 12 days) but it also needs added load in order for continuous adaptation to take place (ie, you get fitter or 'better' at running).

Again, depending on your body, think about your rest days (non-running). I usually start off running one day, rest the next, or running 3 times a week, then increasing it to 4 days a week after 3 weeks. Then a month later increasing it to 5 days a week. Listen to your body to know when it's time to rest (not run).

I also recommend logging your runs in a notebook, just so you can monitor your increases and improvements and see exactly what works best for you.

For TD purposes I think it's safe to accept a fitness level of Fat Bastard.

Can't do it here in LOS unless it's 5am before the dogs and sun comes up.

Too hot & too dangerous. At least with a bike you've got a fighting chance against these soi dogs...

I had to fit out a gym with machines.

FBT on Ramkhangpaeng has a whole floor full of machines - many different brands and price ranges (7th or 8th floor)

FBT :: Football thai factory sporting goods co., ltd.
