How do you 'find' new music to listen to?

This is my new favourite site of the moment:

Last.fm - The Social Music Revolution

I'm only browsing at the moment, but it is possible to sign up (free) for a radio station similiar to Pandora. A plugin can also be installed which will upload a list of the tracks that you play on iTunes or whatever - this information is used to build 'popularity' charts.

I use the site to find similar bands to those I like and then I can listen to the most regularly played songs for that band and then if I like them I will put a poster up on my bedroom wall and maybe get a tattoo.

I also listen to BBC Radio 6 - a fine, fine radio station.

Yahoo! Music LAUNCHcast and charts from many countries. That's why I always get some songs that noone ever hear.

I too use charts - metacritc is a site which collects reviews from many sources and posts a points-out-of-hundred for those of us too lazy to read reviews.

Mine are probably quite famous already - like Arctic Monkeys, The Ordinary Boys, Babyshambles (new?), Dirty Pretty Things (new?), Cribs, etc....

But like your other choices, so come on, spill them out...

P.S. I have a Mac, so don't post no rubbish no more...

I love the song Powder Blue by Elbow and Kasabian's album was a cracker. I've never heard of The Subways until now.....I am on the case. I've just checked my iTiunes and the only Tenacious D track I have is Tribute.....must find others....must find others.....

Tenacious D is a joke band organised by Jack Black, so you can imagine the rest! But it does include the bassist from Nirvana, plus a very good guitarist who I have never heard of but is obviously a friend of JB...

I don't know if you like footy or not, but this album is fantastic "Soccer AM The Music". It's got a single on by all of my most recent favourite bands, and, it appears, half of yours!

I often go to amazon and see what other customers have bought along similar lines to bands I already like, before doing a torrent search.

It's a bit hit & miss though.

^Me too. I keep meaning to put my own lists on Amazon but I'm just too bloody laz......See, I'm even to laz to complete the word.

Why would I need any new music?

I can't help myself - There are some songs which I have played a zillion times and they still make me tingle - I feel the need to hunt down others which may have the same effect - I like to tingle.

Well I have hunted down the subways....that's the group, I haven't been out hunting down subway tunnels....I think that they are very very good indeed Mr Mango - They remind me of the hives....that's the group, not the housing complexes where bees live.

Ah, seriously now: Pandora, Internet Radio, friends suggestions....

As for Internet Radio I like KGSR and KCRW.

I like Internet Radio. Much better to have no DJ's.....In the UK it's frustrating waiting for a song as the DJ rattles on about how he bought a new cardigan at the weekend....I mean, I'm interested in his cardigan story, but I'd rather read about it the newspapers.

For sure. I do like DJ's who provide a bit of band information now and then though. It just shouldn't be too much, and definitely not focus on the DJ...

I listen to XFM online from London.Its good for indie/rock music like Arctic Moneys,Kasabian,Snow Patrol etc......take a listen!

^ Great choice, I often listen to xfm too, they have a cracking playlist. I used to listen to it when I was back home, although you can't really get it outside of London. Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant(sp?) used to have a fucking hilarious show on Saturday lunchtimes - I nearly ran my car off the road laughing so hard one time.

I also listen to Virgin Radio online, which is a bit like Xfm but maybe slightly more mainstream with older stuff on aswell.

yep,Gervais and Merchant did some great shows.Do you know if they are still on air?Brings back memories of sitting in traffic in Peckham

Virgin is good too,much better than it used to be.
I reccomend any of the Hedkandi complilations to anyone who likes decent house music....also,an album thats available in Thailand called "Channel V present Dude/Sweet"..the album from the clubnight at Astra...Great Brit/Yank guitar stuff!

The Subways are awesome and Tenacious D are not new! Well not new to me anyway. Tribute is a classic song and I know all the words from their album off by heart. Everyone should!

Agreed.

I really like a band called Futon and they are on that album, they are great.
