    Avatar...

Avatar, the latest film from James Cameron will be released worldwide on December 18th... I heard about this film earlier this year and have been looking forward to the opening ever since... It's a scifi thriller that is shot in 3D and mixes live action with CGI animation...

    Here's a link to the film's website...

The trailer looks like it's going to be a winner...

Yes, it will be! It's a James Cameron film.

He's also shooting his next film alongside it - Battle Angel, to be released next.

Looks visually impressive, but I hope there's a strong story and it isn't too cutesy. 230 million Dollars to make....it needs to be really good...

If nothing else it has to be better than some of this years SciFi offerings... Being a bit of a SciFi fan, I was sorely disappointed with Weathermen and District 9...

There is no doubt that James Cameron will give us another blockbuster...

Never judge a film by the trailer, plenty of stinkers look great in trailers. For a film that could have cost anywhere up to $500,000,000 depending on what you read its got a lot of work to do.

Ive been let down so many times by hyped films that I tread very carefully with them nowadays.

I rarely go out to a theater to watch new films while at home for the same reasons... Disappointed to many times... Given James Cameron's track record I'll give this one a shot... The combination of live action & CGI, special effects, along with being presented in 3D should make for an interesting 2 hours if nothing else...

My main argument in support of your statement is always "Episode 1's trailer looked good too, and look what we got"

Agreed, but consider this - how many James Cameron films have you been let down by?

    WHAT?

You reject the critically acclaimed and superbly excellent PIRANHA 3??? Heretic!

    Seriously, if you didn't like Terminator and Terminator 2, then you probably haven't heard of ALIENS either; or TRUE LIES; or THE ABYSS;

or seen any of his underwater documentaries, like GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS; or EXPEDITION: BISMARK; or ALIENS OF THE DEEP; etc...

If you neither know, nor like any of these, then don't bother with AVATAR.

James Cameron made Piranha 2, not 3.

He's done some pretty good films, not my favourite director by any means, but this Avatar should be a good watch.

Agreed with melvbot though, great trailers can b made from crap films.

Well worth going to the cinema to watch it in the full 3D. Don't wait for the DVD because it won't be the same.

I saw it, it was too long and me and the Missus both fell asleep during the last 20 minutes or so. Highly overrated - I would not even download the torrent for free.

Do you have a link to the download? and was it a good copy?

I was thinking about going to the cinema to see it but I'm not a big fan of the cinema and the 3D thing would probably give me a headache.

The copy was fine just a small subtitle problem..during the film there's a little bit of 'original lingo' which was subtitled into german..no good for me unfortunately but barely effected the movie..have a gander at piratebay mate..

Bummer - you missed half of what made the movie worthwhile. The 3D experience is unsurpassed.

    Hopeless.

3D is not used as a gimmick in this movie, it truly assists to envelop you into the world.

Broke the $1 *billion* dollar mark today.

While most movies suffer 30% to 50% drop-off in attendance after opening day (because word of mouth spreads that they suck), AVATAR has maintained a steady $18-$20 million a day, with maybe a 1-2% fluctuation up or down.

Not only do a lot of people want to see it, a lot of people want to see it AGAIN.

^ Do you have to wear 3D glasses? Sorry not been to a 3D movie since Alton Towers 1995.

And if yes what are they like? Paper/Plastic framed? Basically could I slip them over my normal glasses?

    Cheers

The technology has changed quite a bit since then -- apart from the fact that Cameron has developed and designed his own cameras to do it right, there are 3 different types of glasses I have found so far that are in use in the US.

One is the larger kind, with a wide viewing angle (and which could fit over regular glasses). They come in a black or grey plastic. One kind uses just regular polarized lenses, the other uses polarized and ever so slightly tinted lenses (magenta / cyan) - don't worry, the movie is appropriately color corrected, so with the glasses everything looks fine.

There's one additional type of glasses which are thin, small, and offer a somewhat restricted viewing angle -- those are crap, though they might fit over regular glasses.

Basically, pick 2-3 cinemas that show the movie in 3D, and check to see what glasses they use.

I have had several friends that have gone to see it in 3D in Bangkok, and so far all have been amazed and given it very positive reviews.
