Did some bastard nick your Digital Camera?

Well then there's an outside chance this might help.

Your camera sometimes stores the serial number in the metadata of each photograph. So if you upload an old pic of yours to this site, it then checks where it can (that I'm not sure about) looking for photos that match the serial number.

Perhaps someone could try it out, I don't have a camera in the office.

    Stolen Camera Finder

Every photo you take with your digital camera contains hidden information about both the image and the camera such as the make, model and date. This information, called exif data, can also include a unique serial number which identifies your camera.
stolencamerafinder crawls the internet searching for photos, collecting the serial numbers of the cameras that took them.
When you use the drag & drop feature, stolencamerafinder reads the unique serial number from the exif data of your photo and uses it to match against serial numbers it has stored.

This sounds like quite an evasion of privacy.

Let's copy a picture off someone we don't like on a forum, then get them to show us every other pic they've ever uploaded onto the net with that same camera.

downloading the image to the gallery here first
seems to take off most of the Exif data

Fortunately I managed to beat off the men in black.

And now I'm here to save the day.

    Remove metadata from images

BatchPurifier LITE™ is a free edition of BatchPurifier™ that can remove metadata from JPEG files in batch. BatchPurifier LITE™ is able to thoroughly remove JPEG metadata such as EXIF (including thumbnail), Photoshop image resources (including IPTC), XMP, comments, ICC Profile, and other hidden data types while keeping the JPEG image intact and without degrading its quality.
BatchPurifier LITE can remove exif, xmp, iptc, and other hidden data

This metadata often contains information such as the exact date and time the photograph was taken, the digital camera manufacturer, model, and unique serial number, the camera settings, and the location (if GPS-enabled camera was used). Furthermore, a thumbnail of the image often exist in the JPEG file, and many image manipulation software fail to update this thumbnail when the original image is modified. So even if the image was cropped, or otherwise modified to hide certain parts in it, the removed parts may still be visible in the thumbnail.

With BatchPurifier LITE™ you can prevent the unintentional exposure of this information that may compromise your privacy and cause you embarrassment.
    Oh and a viewer here

Oooh, the first live test. You might have to wait for whoever ends up with the camera to start taking pictures and posting them online, and for this site to index them.
