Lamb Vindaloo last night- finally found something that truly deserves the adjective of "spicy" in UB
I've got some frozen catfish fillets in the fridge- what should I do with them?
Just gave me a nice flashback to my mom. Her favorite meal coming from childhood was fried catfish in cornmeal with hushpuppies... Brought a big smile to my face.
What are hushpuppies, ao? Presumably not a shoe brand like in the UK.
Edit: Uncle Google tells me this: A hushpuppy is a small, savory, deep-fried ball made from cornmeal-based batter. Hushpuppies are frequently served as a side dish with seafood and other deep-fried foods.
My mom would make me fries or chips. I would have a hushpuppy or two but not the fan my parents were. I also never really got into cornbread which they both loved.
^The day I was involved in that big multi-vehicle fuckup on I-80 in Pennsylvania, back in Feb. 2010, there were thousands of those Jiffy boxes scattered all over the highway. I'll never forget the surrealness of that. Never really wanted to see another box of Jiffy since.
Hush puppies are ok in small doses and with catfish as AO pictured...other than that, meh. I do like my wife's cornbread though.
The wife and I were downtown and thought we'd stop by La Monita since it had been a awhile. On our way, within sight of the sign, I saw a magical word advertised outside "Reuben Sandwich" and I looked to my left and saw a place called "El Osito".
We went in and I quickly realized while the Mexican food on offer was on the upper end of the price scale, they also offered a variety of other stuff, like pasta and well a pastrami Reuben. I've not had a proper Reuben since I've been here and this one filled the order perfectly....
First, the wife ordered, I shit you not, corned beef pasta. I tried to explain that perhaps that might not be the best choice and we both agreed I was right. I was less than whelming.
Our sides...potatoes on potatos...potato salad and potatoes roasted in beef tallow. The potatoes in beef tallow were simply the best spuds I've ever put in my mouth. The wife abandoned her dish and finished them, after a brief discussion about fair distribution of food by me in which I ended up with a minor knife wound across the back of my hand. Sloane's sells lard, we want to try recreating the dish using that.
My Reuben was very, very good, I got the petite size as I wanted to have room to sample the sides and drink a beer. A perfect blend of rye bread, sauerkraut and dressing...

CFS that sarnie looks the biz, i could go one now with the pickles. A bit gauche but how much?
So not too bad considering the skill invested in making a proper one. Second lunch for Tom..... cost hardly worth mentioning..... for Tom

...beg to differ: the Reuben I had there was mildly disappointing...dryish meat lacking the sharp flavors of a NY deli sandwich...the sides we ordered, including potato salad and slaw were a tad bland, but satisfying. Overall (imo), La Monita is a better bet, if only for the margaritas...
Majestically enthroned amid the vulgar herd
...yep: that's what I had in mind^...an abundance of flavor, cholesterol, sodium and life-threatening elements...
An excellent documentary that may be of interest...
