    Can't provide a proper answer to your question although I should expect the monk's remains were 'preserved' out of love and respect for things he'd accomplished on this plain, if not for his family, then, for others.

    I once attended the funeral of a friend's father held at a Wat near Chon Buri.: forty monks a-chanting, an abundance of eulogy, dangerously-near fireworks just prior to the cremation which took place beneath a 13-meter chimney of more-permanent masonry construction. Fascinating for myself.

    If you look in the OP's first picture you will see a fairly large rectangular glass box. This glass box contained the monk and was stored in the main house where the senior monks lived.
