Lady Boys to show off their googlies

Talk of the Town: Lady Boys to show off their googlies
    23 July 2010

THE Lady Boys of Bangkok are heading this way and keen to show off their googlies - official!

For the tenth successive year the troupe will be performing at the Fringe but this time round it appears they are keen to fit in some cricket between shows.

The Lady Boys have been taking lessons at a club in Cheshire and Akkarapol Khon Kaen, 29,says: "I thought it was a bit like baseball but I found out that I was wrong.

"I had no idea that the ball was so hard. It's really dangerous."

The Lady Boys are in the Capital from 6-28 August.

And then I found out you were actually talking about cricket.

"How do you get the wicket like that?"
"You roll it and tend it and feed it, roll it, tend it, feed it for about 500 years..... then a bunch off poofs in suspenders and high heels walk over and ruin it."

The one in yellow is no Kathoey. It's a bloody ringer. He's as manly as any Englishman.

For some real fun, they should go to Pakistan. Imagine the excitement as the Pakistanis would be torn between courting the pretty boys and being terrorized of losing to them all the while there would religious nutters screaming for their nutsacks to be ripped of and the ladyboys burnt alive.
Kindness is spaying and neutering one's companion animals.

After the Black Caps nine run win last night against Indian side Maharashtra I wouldn't be surprised if the ladyboy's couldn't be arsed playing NZ. Think they'd prefer "stiffer" opposition...

Could "man" it up a bit by replacing the ball with one sort of crossed with a kung fu star, then the Pakistanis don't have to gouge the ball to make it deviate in flight... perhaps

Lady Boys kick off their 2012 carnival season with spell in their favourite city
    Friday, March 30, 2012

THE arrival of the Lady Boys of Bangkok and their Sabai Pavilion has become as much a herald of spring in Derby as the start of the cricket season at the County Ground.

Derby, it seems, loves the Lady Boys.
The glamorous showgirls who just happen to be boys not only start their summer season every year in Derby, they also rehearse the show in the city at Déda. Audiences also grow year on year, enticed back each season with a new production.

The Lady Boys will be taking residence in the Market Place from April 6-21 with their latest offering, Carnival Queens, and already ticket sales are booming.

Director Phillip Gandey says the continued appeal of the Lady Boys lies in the show's ability to renew itself every year.

"Our dancers, choreographer, set and lighting designer were given the ideas for the new show as soon as last year's opened," he says.

"So Carnival Queens has been 12 months in the making. It is infused with the topical comedy, surprises and satire that only the Lady Boys can deliver.

It resounds to the timeless Latin beats of fiesta and pulsates to the chart topping sounds of today.

"The result is our unique comedy-cabaret experience."

And for the Lady Boys Derby has become a home from home.

Phillip says: "We spend more time in Derby than anywhere else. Derby's the first date of the season and when we arrive from Bangkok we rehearse at Déda, fine tuning the production before we move into the pavilion on the Market Place. Derby is firmly fixed on the Lady Boys calendar.

"The tickets went on sale in December and sold quite heavily straight away. The city has taken us to their hearts and the support is very good indeed.

"The Market Place is a great location and I think we benefit the whole city economy. People will go to a bar before or a meal after the show. We have had comments from businesses in the centre of Derby saying that they look forward to the Lady Boys coming as the they do more business, especially on weekdays.

"It's nice to be wanted and appreciated."

Carnival Queens is a parade through the comedy and cabaret capers we have come to expect, this time to fiesta beats.

Phillip says: "There's a new James Bond film this year, The Muppets are big ... so expect them to make an impact and, of course, we will have a few of the songs that have made a big impression on the UK charts over the last year.

"We still have the torch songs, the standards that people expect and love but I always leave spaces for events and songs that are topical. We do satire and comedy and we like to be right up to date with that."

Phillip says that he now very much knows what the public wants from The lady Boys of Bangkok.

"Originally it was very much as it was in Thailand, much more serious. Some of the songs were in Thai and it didn't have the comedy element.

"But more and more people say to us that they come to the Lady Boys because it's a fun night out. Yes we do a few theatrical, serious numbers but the comedy is vitally important.

"We might also bring back a few successful bits from previous years. A bit like a Rolling Stones concert, people expect their favourites but we always keep it fresh."

Another key component of the shows are the lavish costumes – there's more than 300 handmade outfits for this year's production.

Phillip says: "The costumes are only used for one season so Derby absolutely gets the best because all the costumes are brand new when we open on April 6."

After leaving Derby, the Lady Boys will tour other cities in the UK through to the autumn.

Phillip says it takes a few repeat visits for the show to take off and that their biggest marketing tool is word of mouth.

"We have been in Derby a few years now and it has really taken off," he says. "Last year we were 30 per cent up on 2010 which was fantastic in a time when money is in short supply.

"I have flown to Thailand twice in the last month to take a look at rehearsals with our UK choreographer and the show is looking fantastic. I'm sure Derby will love it."

Batting for the other side and bowling from the pavilion end is normal for cackpipe cosmonauts.
