BANGKOK, 18 November 2018, (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has called on members of the public to resort to natural materials when celebrating the annual Loi Krathong Festival this November 22.
Last year, the BMA collected nearly 812,000 Krathong baskets from canals and waterways in Bangkok, of which more than 760,000 baskets or 93.6% were made of natural materials and the remaining 52,000 baskets or 6.4% were made of Styrofoam.
According to its survey, the BMA said since 2008, the production of environmentally-friendly Krathong baskets skyrocketed by 93% whereas the production of Styrofoam baskets plunged by 13%, as Loi Krathong revelers have become more aware of the precious environment.
As for this year’s festival, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will host Loi Krathong activities under the government’s 3R campaign – reduce, reuse, and recycle – in order to minimize the impact of human activities to the environment.
The campaign encourages people to use only one Krathong basket per family as opposed to one basket per person.
