Drug-accused Briton appears masked on TV in Bali



A British man accused of smuggling cannabis into Bali has appeared wearing a mask at a TV press conference.


Zaid Thanoon, a photographer from Sheffield, was put in front of cameras with another man on Wednesday.
He was arrested on 12 July, suspected of carrying three-and-a-half grams of cannabis into Indonesia.

A second man who appeared, Victor Ortegarocha, from Chile, was allegedly caught with three grams of cannabis the following day.

Both men appeared before local media at the customs office near Ngurah Rai airport on Bali.

The Foreign Office said it was assisting a British man following his arrest in Indonesia.

Bali is an island and province of Indonesia, which has some of the toughest drug laws in the world.

News agency AFP said sentences for smugglers who carry five or more grams include the death penalty.


According to local media reports, Mr Thanoon admitted being a recreational cannabis user.

Reports say the 26-year-old was arrested after he arrived from Thailand.

His Instagram page showed he had previously been travelling in China, Mongolia and Hong Kong.

A man from the Netherlands was also arrested but was not brought before the cameras.

There should be a worldwide amnesty on these idiots who carry tiny amounts, and even on Cannabis users generally. It's pretty harmless.

There was story yesterday about a british woman, who when trying to fly out of indonesia was found to have overstayed her visa by a few months, the immigration official asked her to pay her 25 pounds a day overstay fine before she would be allowed to leave.

She lost it, let loose with a torrent of foul chav abuse before punching the immigration official in the face.

Shes now in gaol awaiting trial.

She looked to be around 30, of eastern mediterranean descent and was very fat........ (in case anyone was wondering.)

Anyone with half a brain cell would not take anything other than aspirin through Indonesian customs.
For you to describe any amount of cannabis imported into such a country as harmless, simply marks you as brain dead.
Why not grow up, admit to your personal failings and take responsibility for the shit that is your life?

Sod Indonesia. If in need a an inexpensive beach holiday there are alternatives. Colombia has a much more relaxed attitude towards sparking up.
