    Storms, hail warning for Wednesday-Friday

    Bangkok Post

    WRITER: ONLINE REPORTERS

Wanchai Sakudomchai, director-general of the Meteorological Department, said on Monday that thunderstorms and hailstorms were possible in the four regions, starting in the Northeast on March 7.

They could move into other regions, including Bangkok, on following days.

People should stay away from outdoor areas, big trees and insecure billboards during the storms, and farmers should be prepared to cope with damage to crops and infrastructure, he said.

Mr Wanchai said the weather was being brought by a high pressure system from China that would move into upper Thailand, beginning with the Northeast on Wednesday, and the South China Sea.

Chayapol Thitisak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said people affected by the storm could seek help via the department's hotline number 1784 around the clock.

During March 8-9, areas to be affected with freak storm include Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani in the Northeast; Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Sukhothai, Uttradit, Phitsanuloke, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit and Petchabun in the North; Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Sing Puri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Rat Buri, Bangkok and its peripherals in the central region; and southern provinces of Petchaburi, Prachuab Khiri Khan, Chumporn and Surat Thani.

BANGKOK, 6 March 2018 (NNT) - The Meteorological Department has warned people in upper parts of Thailand to brace for a tropical storm forecast to arrive in Thailand on Wednesday.

Director-General of the Meteorological Department Wanchai Sak-udomchai said the North and Northeast will experience scattered thundershowers and hailstorms from March 6th - 7th due to a high pressure system from China. The northeastern provinces expected to be affected include Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Maha Sarakham, Kalasin, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Buriram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani.

I had a video chat with the wife this morning and she was proudly showing me her mango orchard. I can't imagine that a hail storm would do her any favours.

Can occur nearly any time of the year, oddly enough.
    Hence, the terminology freak storm.

Most unusual, in this case, would be the chosen time of the year - between "seasons".....sort to speak.

Freak storm wrecks havoc in Thanyaburi district of Pathum Thani

in Breaking News, General | March 07, 2018 | By Thai PBS

Four people sustained minor injuries, five cars were damaged by 11 power poles which were pulled down by a freak storm which hit Thanyaburi district of Pathum Thani on Wednesday afternoon (March 7).

The collapse of the power poles along the Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok road in Village 3 of Thanyaburi district forced officials of the provincial electricity authority to cut off the electricity supply before they could remove the fallen power poles from the road with the use of heavy machinery.

Traffic on the road came to halt and the bumper-to-bumper traffic congestion extended as far as about ten kilometres while workers were trying to move the fallen power poles out of the road.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Thai Meteorological Department issued a warning of freak storm during today until Friday in most parts of the country, with the possibility of hailstorm in some parts.

People were warned to stay clear of huge billboards and not to stand in open space or under big trees.

Hit here around 6pm. About an hour of heavy rain and wind. No damage. Hardly what I consider freak.

No hail as big as baseballs?...

Only hailstorm that had me worried was driving through Montana (I think) on a mountain highway...Jaysus, the hail kept getting bigger and I was sure the headlights and windshield would be smashed...

Hailstones reached maybe an inch in diameter...And I noticed the car started "rolling" on the road like it was on ball-bearings...

    Time to pull over...

Weather Bureau issues storm warnings in most regions; RID prepares for floods

BANGKOK, 7th March 2018, (NNT) - The Thai weather forecasting bureau has warned Bangkok residents of possible tropical storms in the region, while the Royal Irrigation Department is preparing for possible flooding.

The Meteorological Department has advised that, from Wednesday to Friday, some areas in the North, the Northeast, the Central plains and the East, including the capital and its vicinity, are likely to experience thundershowers with harsh winds and possible hail storms.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities as storms arrive.

A high pressure system from China is expected to remain over the upper part of Thailand and the South China Sea during the period 10th - 12th March, with southeasterly winds bringing humidity to the northern region.

The south can expect less precipitation, due to weakening easterly winds currently dominating the region.

Meanwhile, Royal Irrigation Department Deputy Director-General Thaweesak Thanadechopol has instructed personnel in all irrigation zones to prepare for floods. Officials should closely follow the latest weather updates and get hold of necessary machines and equipment such as water pumps.

According to the latest report, Thailand’s major dams currently hold a combined 54 billion cubic meters of water, which is 7 billion cubic meters more than in the same period last year.

Thaweesak pointed out that the four main dams along the Chao Phraya River, currently hold a combined 16 billion cubic meters, accounting for 67 percent of their total capacity.

The four dams are Bhumibol, Sirikit, Kwai Noi Bumrung Dan and Pasak Jolasid.

The wingman's chum in Rangsit had her home flooded yesterday and it's pissing down here in Pattaya with a vengeance although the sun seems to be shining too. Very freakish.

Bit of rain and thunder last couple of days here in Rayong. Hailstones would certainly be "freakish" here. Never seen any in 20+ years.

Thunderstorms all night here in Pattaya and woke up to rain and grey skies. Still grim and gloomy with grumbling thunder in the distance but the rain has eased off.

heavy rain now in hua hin.

a spectacular storm front came rolling in about 30 minutes ago.

a dark swathe of low based roiling nimbostratus framed on its leading edge by a classic arcus shelf formation along with strong winds moved across the coast followed by heavy rain, some thunder followed.

temperature down by a good few degrees as well.
