Samui’s garbage problem is getting out of control

Garbage disposal problem in Samui Island is getting out of control as local authorities warn that within the next eight months, it’s 30-rai landfill now holding more than 200,000 tons of accumulated garbage will be full and is unable to handle any more daily garbage of 150-200 tons.

The warning came from Samui mayor Ramnate Jaikwang earlier this week as the garbage problem is getting worse.

Mayor Ramnate said at present the island’s 30-rai landfill already holds mountains of garbage of over 200,000 tons, while 150-200 tons keep coming in daily for disposal.

The local administration is calling a bid to dispose it.

The huge piles of garbage was accumulated at its disposal plant at Tambon Maret since 2012 after its incinerator had broken down.

It broke down because it burnt without proper separation of the garbage from the original sources, he said.

With the accumulated garbage plus the daily garbage coming in, this landfill will no longer hold any more after the next eight months, he said.

But he said that if there is no problem in the bidding, the disposal of the garbage outside the island could begin mid next month (September 2017).

He said that the main reason to remove the garbage out of Samui for disposal in mainland disposal plants because of growing protest by local residents.

Local communities are concerned of environmental impact from the garbage landfill and incinerator, he said.

As the local administration is also sympathised with them, it therefore holds bid to get a contractor to move the garbage out for disposal outside the island as the best option to resolve the garbage problem, he said.

But he added a campaign is necessary to urge residents as well as business operators to separate their garbage and reduce the garbage they throw daily.

Of the existing 600 business operators, including hotel and tour companies, only 10% have been active in the campaign, he added.

so let me get this correct , the incinerator broke down in 2012, and they have been unable to either fix or replace or really give a shit about it for 5 frickin years !

and now the island is overloaded with rubbish !

Good, let the island drown in it, the brains trust that run that island beggar belief.

It's a microcosmic reflection of what's happening on the whole planet, in other ways.

Such as our pollution of the ocean....plastic being the very least of it.

There were waiting for the cost of transporting garbage to go up to 400 baht per ton. Now there will be garbage barges fighting for berths.

    Jesus......

Samui wil become a huge engine, with boats feeding tourists and food in one end, after which the island digests them........fed, intoxicated, fucked and tanned......... and spitting them and garbage out the other end.

Considering how much tourist dollars pours into that shit house one would think that they would have that much spare cash there would be a rubbish incinerator on every fooking corner.

Anyway, fook em, just laugh at the pin headed retards eh.

It broke down for the same reason that cars and motorcycles of Thais--including men who should know better--don't do basic, simple things like check the oil.

The solution is quite straight forward. There are dozens of international companies that specialize in energy recovery facilities, (ERF).
I is not a new concept, but it would require Thailand to drop the xenophobia and admit it is not the centre of the world in all matters.

    https://plastics.americanchemistry.c...Facilities.pdf

The link is Just one of many facilities which can combine recycling, sorting, recovery and disposal of all waste products. Take out anything of value, process organic waste, burn the remainder to provide energy, while containing toxic by products caused by burning.
Many of these processes actually profit from materials recovery, organic waste recycling and energy production.
After the initial investment, the process becomes self financing and provides enough power to fuel community demand for electricity.

Inviting such companies to invest and share the proceeds, seems to be anathema to Thai logic.
