To control population, Yogyakarta offers Rp 1 million for men to undergo vasectomies

The Yogyakarta administration has offered Rp 1 million as an incentive to any man who is willing to undergo vasectomy surgery in a family planning program.

The province’s acting head of population control and family planning agency, Eny Rosmawati, said on Sunday that her administration has been offering the incentive since 2016.

“The purpose is to increase men’s participation in family planning,” Eny said, as quoted by kompas.com.

The number of men in the province who have gotten vasectomies represent only 0.69 percent of the total number of participants in all family planning programs. Most of those involved in family planning are women, 32.46 percent of whom use IUD contraceptives.

Besides giving an incentive, the administration is also raising people's awareness about family planning.

“We inform the citizens through traditional art performances. We hope that men can understand that participating in the program is not a scary thing,” Eny said.

In Yogyakarta, only 71 percent of 43,749 married couples of reproductive age have participated in family planning. (rdi/wit)
