Chiang Mai hospital denies they are using needles over and over to save money

A leading private hospital in Chiang Mai has hit back at online allegations that they have been using needles more than once to inject sick people.

The claims raged online after a video - now deleted - showed that a patient was getting shots from the same needle that had already been used, reported Sanook.

Many people online said that it was scandalous that the hospital was risking the health of patients by trying to save money on needles.

What would happen if someone got infected through sharing needles, they demanded.

The drama has caused the Rachawet Chiang Mai Hospital considerable trouble said director Dr Weerachart Lertnitikun.

He said that the footage that emerged two or three days ago was all a big misunderstanding.

He said that the poster of the footage was the relative of a diabetic person. It was the diabetic's own personal needle that they had already used at home to inject insulin.

Guidelines state that needles for personal use in injecting insulin can be used up to three times.

Dr Weerachart said that it had nothing to do with the hospital being economical and trying to save money.

He stressed further that despite international regulations that hospitals could use needles up to five times for insulin jabs his hospital had a policy of one use only for injections of all kinds.

He added that the person who posted the clip did not understand all aspects of care for diabetics or might have had some other motive.

    ??.??.????????? ????????????????????????????????

Ratchavej Hospital? I'd be surprised if this particular hospital had to reuse needles to save money.

There are much better ways to save money than reusing needles, if they really are. It is just a drop in the bucket.

Hope the idiot who took this picture and started this defamatory story gets a dose of Thai justice in the form of a defamation suit.
But then I'd also like to see "right not to be photographed" and "right not to be put on the internet" legislation become more common everywhere.

If you're going to take hidden pictures and publicly accuse someone or some organization of gross misconduct, you better damn well be right. If she had taken the picture and made a quiet complaint to the appropriate government regulatory agency, that would be different.

If my memory serves me correctly,, when we were kids getting injections at school, they used the same needle but waved it through a metho flame each time. ??

In days or yore needles were all reusable they were sterilized with direct heat as above or in an autoclave.

The reason she didn't do that is because she wouldn't have got likes etc. wouldn't have her 15 mins of fame and would have had to be responsible.
She is lazy. Complaining is less effort than fixing.

    Storm in a tea cup.

It’s actually very common to reuse both syringes and lancets (for finger pricks) for the sake of saving money–it’s not as though there’s much else in diabetes management that can be reused!
    https://www.diabetesdaily.com/blog/2...use-a-syringe/

Forty-three out of the 57 readers we surveyed re-use their needles, from two to as many as 150 times.

My ex is a nurse, she's worked in a government hospitals and three private hospitals, she reckons this storey is total bullshit, there's absolutely no way Thai hospitals are about to put patients health at risk for the price of a needle, it just doesn't happen.

The patient wasn't put at risk as it was his own needle that was reused on him, quite common for insuline shots ...

It might be common when done at home by the person themselves but it's not normal practice to use a needle twice in a Thai hospital no matter where it's come from, in fact it's quite unheard of.

The hospitals make so much $$$ in prescribing medications, I cannot see them risking their reputations on this.

Rings a distant bell, too. Wasn't it something like "Scurvy" they were inoculating us against?

I guess they didn't want to charge him for a new needle as the patient brang his own needle, not up to standard but not dangerous ... I don't know if the patient would have to pay for a new needle (and if he could keep bring it back home), if no it's a petty way to cut cost ...if yes there is room for discussion (hai way etc), if he was neverthless charged for a non existent new needle that would look worst...
