Beef smuggling into Thailand's Sungai Kolok town in Narathiwat province remains rampant as local demand is high and price is cheaper.
Wang Prachan customs office chief Thawan Rodjit said beef smuggling from Malaysia came in various patterns.
He said they are smuggled by ant armies in small amount of 2-3 boxes for a smuggler or in large amount mingled with farm crops such as onions and garlic.
For this year,he said over 4.9 tons of smuggled beef were seized.
But he said smuggling continued as it was cheaper in price when compared with local slaughteted beef.
Smuggled beef in frozen form is sold at the border town at 160 baht per kilo while local slaughteted meat is sold at 230-240 baht.
But market survey in Songkhla showed smuggled beef are not sold here because traders viewed if the frozen meat could not be sold, they would suffer loss.
Beside, the weight of ice on the meat was another problem that clients were not willing to pay with reason if the ice melts, the beef would become lighter and it would mean the loss.
