Krabi deputy mayor caught accepting bribe

    The Nation July 19, 2016 1:00 am
A Krabi-based deputy mayor was caught red-handed in a sting operation yesterday after he demanded money from a landowner.

Anti-graft officials and police arrested Anusorn Wangphon, deputy mayor for the Tambon Koh Lanta municipality, when he received Bt2 million cash and a cheque for Bt5 million as bribes.

"Police have brought him to Ao Nang Police Station for further questioning," an informed source said.

The source said the National Anti-Corruption Commission planned the sting operation after receiving a complaint from a land buyer last week. The complainant bought land on Lanta Yai Island for Bt80 million.

"Anusorn has allegedly asked for Bt20 million [in bribes] from the landowner, saying that the money would go to various people to facilitate the issuing of land title deeds for the plots," the source said.

The first bribe instalment was Bt7 million. The sting operation was set up when the landowner was supposed to hand over the first instalment to Anusorn.

Deputy mayor given the boot over bribery case

KRABI GOVERNOR Pinit Boonlert yesterday dismissed the deputy mayor of Tambon Koh Lanta municipality after he was caught red-handed taking partial payment for a Bt20 million bribe that he had demanded from a landowner.

Pinit said he had also ordered the district office and land officials to look into the land rights documents issued for these plots and to punish anyone who is found involved in criminal activities.

Krabi land official Watchara Buathong said an initial check found that the 90 rai, for which six land rights documents were issued in 2014, overlapped a 400-rai public plot that had been registered since 1933.

The 400-rai land is slated for demarcation on July 21.

And especially if they can save 20 million.

I hope they get the extortionist to tell who the other palms he was supposed to grease belong to.
