City officials told not to allow street vendors to return to reclaimed street pavemen

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) yesterday warned its city officials of severe disciplinary punishment if they allow street vendors to return occupying street pavements that have been cleared and reorganised for trade.

The severe disciplinary punishment could mean transfer to inactive positions for negligence of duties.

The warning was given as the chairman of the Bangkok governor’s advisory board Mr Wallop Suwande summoned a meeting with chiefs of all Bangkok’s 50 districts and heads of city police at 21 districts.

The meeting was aimed at reviewing the recent campaigns to reorganise street vending in the capital, and to give new instructions.

The meeting was told of the return of street vendors to trade on some pavements earlier reclaimed by the BMA from vendors, notably at the Victory Monument, Ramkhamkaeng and Saphan Lek.

Although only a handful of street vendors have returned to the reclaimed street pavements, but Mr Wallop insisted that no vendors would be allowed.

He then warned of severe disciplinary punishment if city officials neglect duties and allow vendors to return.

The heaviest punishment might be transfer to inactive positions, he warned.

However such severe punishment has been propose to the BMA executive board for approval.

On the solving of flower vendors at Pak Klong Talad, he said they will be allowed to trade until February 28.

So far the BMA has successfully reclaimed 39 street pavements at 21 districts, involving 14,876 vendors,

Great how the authorities here are trying another "crackdown" of street vendors and the obvious fake brands they sell.

This from one of Thailand's largest bank ATM's:

At first (I thought this was humour, but upon reflection... in a country where all positions of power are about abusing others and stealing as much money as possible, it makes perfect sense.

This line is worth considering, it sums up the Thai patronage system: no legal or moral punishment for not doing as the big boss tells you (because that would endanger the entire patronage system), but your ability to steal money will be diminished...
    Cycling should be banned!!!

Good. The selfish bastards should think of the disabled and small children that cannot walk safely on the pavements instead of having to walk in the road to get around them.

The Thai way of life is to live as folk did in the medieval period?

The sooner they bar these ghastly, tax-dodging environmental pollutants from the urban landscape the better.

Only a vacuous, pea-brained, air-headed Lonely Planeteer could possibly find negotiating a cracked and uneven pavement, cluttered by hawkers peddling utter crap in between stepping onto the highway in order to make progress, to be an appealing experience. And in the rainy season it all gets that much better........

The selfish bastards haven't got a pavement to occupy so they take over the cycle lane.

^ That actually looks orderly! Around here, the food carts are parked on both the sidewalks and their customer's motorbikes and cars parked in front of them taking up half the traffic lane. Never mind they force traffic to grind to a standstill with traffic in opposite directions competing for the single lane.

Well at least they haven't stopped motorbikes from riding on the pavements at high speed, after all who wants cold pizza delivered to their door.

When there are no pavement vendors to extort monthly baksheesh from, an inactive position might not be such a bad thing.
