Thai father kills 4 children following spat with wife

Police negotiators laid siege to a house in the country’s south Monday after a man allegedly shot dead four of his children following a dispute with his estranged wife.

The shocking spree is the latest murder rampage in a country where lovers’ quarrels frequently escalate into fatal shootings, partly because of the easy availability of guns.

Police said the man barricaded himself inside his house in southern Trang province after murdering two sons and two daughters early on Monday morning.

“Police had to use a ladder into a bedroom to remove the bodies of the children,” local police captain Wittawat Paiboon told AFP, adding that the man, who had locked himself in another room, had a long and troubled relationship with his estranged wife.

Wittawat said the man was coherent when speaking to negotiators and did not appear to be drunk or on drugs.

Renowned to outsiders for its laid-back, welcoming vibe, Thailand is also a country awash with firearms where disputes are all too frequently settled with a bullet and a body.

Barely a week goes by without a new headline-grabbing killing, usually stemming from a humiliation — or loss of “face” — over a personal or business dispute.

High-profile cases last year included a woman executed by an angry lover in a mall, and a bus driver shooting a passenger in the chest because his victim had repeatedly criticized his road skills.

The Thai government does not provide a specific breakdown for annual gun murders outside of the country’s deep south, where a local Muslim insurgency has killed more than 6,400 in the last decade.

But the Gunpolicy.org website, an online database of global gun statistics run by the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health, believes Thailand has one of the highest gun homicide rates in Asia.

It estimates 3.48 murders per 100,000 people in Thailand, on a par with the United States.

According to the Interior Ministry, there are 6.1 million registered firearms in Thailand, a country with 67 million people.

GunPolicy.org puts the total number of firearms at closer to 10 million, once the thriving black market trade is counted.

What a sad world we live in.

Hatred, greed, geolousy and so called adult behavoir and then the weak and innocent suffer.

What can one say but absolute disgust against our fellow human being.

    May he rot in hell!

Sure, that evil shit goes on elsewhere, many times over.....
but talking from experience myself, when Thais part there is no Child Support Agency to enforce payment to look after the children of that broken relationship, but a hatred and a longing to forget each other at all costs, the ultimate being loss of face, or death as we see here.

Your "newbe" explains your indigence, I used to be offended by bad comments about the Thais and probably owe several members here apologies for comments I made when they referred to the locals as "monkeys."
Stay here about 5 years and learn more about "Thainess" and you'll understand, 80% of the so called men here never grow up, their emotional development stops at 10.

Always amusing to read of those seeking to exculpate Thailand from its idiocy by levelling similar criticisms against other countries as if the same condition prevailed equally around the world.

Poor saps simply can't, or won't, accept that whereas human aberrant behaviour occurs everywhere, here it is the system and that is what is so terrifying.

You're one of the persons I owe an apology to from years back. Your comments used to infuriate me, now I almost parrot them. Sorry for anything bad I may have ever said to you, I was actually thinking about you when I wrote that comment.

^ I went to homicide school as a cop and psychologists cannot explain it. Sadly from being a cop I've had the horror of seeing it up close several times. The images will haunt me for life.

^^^ Oops, but she's a Thai female, they're completely different, probably to make up for the deficiencies of their brothers and husbands.

Cheers Luigi ...I'm not that westernised, even though I spent my adult life (10+ years after uni in UK) I still can't cope without Thai food.
I stlll got a funny accent to go with my pumpkin face and monkey brains.
My first language is Lao, my second Thai, my third is northern English, some of my relatives and friends speak weirder languages too. and we all really sexy asian engineer chicks ;p

I know exactly what Thai men and break-ups are like, I grew up in a remote border village where most people do not get education beyond primary school, and was in the first generation to even go to secondary school, never mind Russell Group university. You might be surprised how often newspaper headlines deviate from reality of Thai norms - even in the village. Seems like you just read the headline and extend it to everyone.

Human behaviour, whether it is deviating from farang norms or not is part of the system in most countries in the world if you think about it. Just in some places it is dressed up with laws and made to look respectable.
Most of the world is developing world, and full of stupid brown monkeys - so it does prevail equally and unequally around the world.
I don't see any of this nutty behaviour in my own backward farmer male relatives. Some of them are a bit tedious, might bore you to death...

Anyway, my mum is in hospital now, in monkeyland, so I haven't got time for this bollocks.

But I'm calling BS. "Grew up in a remote border village"
That's not the writing or attitude of anyone who grew up in a remote border village.
(caveat: unless her father was the local drug/gun running warlord )
