Brit in speeding Mercedes kills Hua Hin cop

A speeding Mercedes driven by a British tourist crashed into a motorcycle in Hua Hin, killing a policeman Wednesday morning.

An officer on duty at Hua Hin police station said the accident happened on Phetkasem Road near Hua Hin Hospital at 2:40 am.

A badly damaged 2-door Mercedes with Bangkok registration was found at the scene. A Yamaha motorcycle without license plates was found about 200 meters away from the car with the body of Police Lance Corporal Wiroon Srinarong, 24 lying nearby.

According to police the Mercedes was driven by John Benjamin, 44, a British citizen who was rushed to hospital. According to Benjamin, he was going from Cha-am towards Hua Hin when the policeman made a u-turn in front of him.

    Report in Thai here...

The road from Cha Am to Hua Hin is, unusually for Thailand, a world class stretch of road, constructed with consummate skill and re surfaced and upgraded on a regular basis. Hua Hin is home to many army bases, government offices and of course the royal palace. The road is a showpiece.

It is four lanes wide, straight as an arrow for 99% of its length and with not so much as a bump or a ripple on its suface for the 35 kms of its length and as such it is something of a racetrack, encouraging young guns from Bangkok in their BMWs, local scrotes three up on their little Honda Waves, gnarly old builders and farmers in their smoke belching old pick ups and balding expats in their brand new CRVs to give it some welly right up until the end of this superhighway at the traffic lights before the palace.

My condo in Hua Hin is beachside to this road and when returning from the town I have to make a U turn across it. Sometimes I have to wait 10 to 15 minutes such is the volume of fast moving traffic and there are accidents daily, mostly motor cycles rushing to make U turns. The Hua Hin hospital is conveniently placed on the road in order to receive victims of the idiocy that this road invites.

That the policeman made a surprise lane change on this road is no surprise, to the locals it is just another country lane.

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out in the court. Wonder if the Brit had a dash cam.

A generous donation to both the Police Christmas Ball fund and the widow should see him alright.

    Red face

The picture of the damage seems to corroborate the Brit's version, as the damage covers a fairly wide area. The damage to the bike should be consistent as well to prove his version of the facts. No mention of alcohol or drugs? An accident reconstruction (of sorts) should be done in this fatality. It would be interesting to see a report.

Isn't it normal practice in a case like this for the Farang to pay a shit load of baksheesh to the Victim. ??

The case then goes away Huh.

I mean this situation is played out every day but usually involves Thais.

I mean, this is nothing unusual for Thailand except it involves a Cop.

If it was Somchai the shit cart collector the Farang would pay 15 bahts compensation and job done.

The foreigner will be blood tested for alcohol and drugs, if the dead policeman was a high ranking officer, I doubt if he would have been riding a motorcycle.

The blood test results can of course be altered if the police so desire.

This will certainly be an interesting case to follow.

Do you have problems reading or just comprehension?

Para 3 of the OP says "Police Lance Corporal Wiroon Srinarong, 24 lying nearby", i.e. 1 step up from nothing.

Yep, seen it many times. An abrupt crossing of two lanes from the motorbike lane with no signal and no looking for oncoming vehicles.

We all deal with this on a daily basis and this Brit was unlucky enough to hit the sideways motorbike. Kinda like hitting a deer that gets caught in your headlights.

No reason to follow this case, since we already know the outcome.

Hence why I avoid driving at nighttime if at all possible. Chances of accident/incident goes up ten fold.

I got caught two weeks ago driving back from Chumphon into Bangkok, all good up until just outside Bangkok, Roads works going on, I arrived back at Bangkok Airport 7.30 PM .

Jesus fookin Christ, my first nighttime drive in Bangkok. What a Muppet show it was.

Thank God for my GPS, I would still be driving around Bangkok now if not for that GPS.

Yes, not driving at night will decrease chances of an accident on many fronts. No rear lights, no lights at all, road hazards, livestock walking across the road and the everpresent motorbike making a u turn.

I try not to drive at night as well, but from time to time have to due to circumstances beyond my control. Also the only time I ever got caught in an road block that was checking for drunk drivers. Luckily, my alcohol level was below the legal limit and I was cut loose.

One other essential bit of kit is the Dash Cam, never leave home without one.

Here is my set up these days.

A friend of mine used to live at Palm Hills (golf course) in Huahin.
His wife, returning home one evening managed to kill a guy on the railway lines, cuts through Palm Hills. He was 'driving' one of those push me pull you type things, used for railway maintenance. No lights!

Anyway, the upshot was, he had to fork out over a million.
