They tend to drop tools at the end of the day, and just leave them until they need them again. I fight a constant battle trying to get workers here to put anything away properly. It might just have been the only potential weapon close at hand. Looks to have been a rocky area off the beach a ways.

For sure the Parents will be devastated but when it all boils down Backpacking in Thailand is quite a safe pastime and very few Backpackers come unstuck.

On the other hand if one is a Farang mongering scum in Pattaya that is a dangerous place to be.

Backpacking in Thailand is hell of a lot safer than Australia that's for sure.

Serious question: Why then do you continue to live in Thailand? I know you are married to a Thai, and presumably you must have had some positive feelings about the people/country at one time since you moved there, but why now prolong the agony?

Actually, that's a good question.

Essentially, for me, Thailand is a work in progress initiated by my marriage. Circumstances are such that I must prepare for the future because like any responsible civilised person I wish to leave my affairs in order, including care for the distaff, when I shuffle off the mortal coil. Once we have completed this process we shall consider further and either split our time between here and there or whatever.

Of all the countries I've spent time in, thereby becoming familiar with their cultures, I have to say Thai society is definitely the worst not least because of their hypocrisy but also because of any lack of moral fibre or true cultural worth beyond some primitive, folkloric nationalism based upon ignorance, greed, stupidity and intellectual impoverishment.

Still, one looks at the whole package. I shall live in agreeable surroundings, albeit insulated from Thai dross, adjacent to the sea and on a pleasant beach in a place where all creature comforts are provided and in a climate which permits year round amenity. It is cheaper than the West and therefore choice is more plentiful. Society among one's own ethnicity is assured and I do enjoy my own company and that of my wife.

The corollary of my disdain for the Thai is that in their country it matters not one jot since they do not require anything of me beyond my money. I'm quite content to live apart from them but then in truth one has no other choice because Thai do not seek companionship or engagement with farang other than at the most superficial level.

I dare say in time I shall gravitate back to England and also spend more time in Portugal and Spain where I have a much closer affinity, chiefly because of a former relationship but the current distaff is of yeoman stock and will follow as long as circumstances permit.

Life is simply about arrangements and most serve.

And yes, at one time there was a real impetus to establishing oneself here but the illusions were soon dispelled and the stark reality of this dreadful place and their ghastly society was soon revealed.

The thing is, Davis, I have never been able to reconcile myself with injustice. Whether it be on a personal level or within a social or political environment and this place is the pits on so many accounts it affronts my very being. Nowhere is perfect but this place and their people just take the piss.

Interesting. Sensible response. I have now lived outside of the US for 38 years, the last 18 here. This country is far from perfect, but in my opinion, and that of my wife, it's better than the US.

It occasionally drives me mad, and I marvel at the stupidity. But then I go read Fox News, and I settle down and appreciate the positives of living here.

My kids will leave, probably to college in the US or elsewhere, and then hopefully on to productive lives in a country where they can earn a decent living.

Since I no longer have a requirement to earn money, nor to work other than to have something to keep me busy, my wife and I shall see it through here.

Many farang here are refugees from somewhere and have established a life because the alternative in their own countries is far from appealing and for most that was the motive in coming.

I am not in that category and never have been. If I had not met my wife I would not be here but would be on the Iberian peninsular eating raciones of Jamon without fear of ejection from whichever bodega I should venture into. I may even establish one there in time and call it El Gulliver.

Unlike some here I have never considered life as anything else but a bridge and the only burnt one is the one across the Styx.

Thai magazines used to be quite keen on publishing crime scene photos including shots of corpses. Are any available for this incident? It might help us solve the case.

Myanmar suspects released


POLICE LAST NIGHT ruled out three Myanmar workers being involved in the murder of two British tourists, as the government appeared to call into question the "behaviour" of the victims themselves.

The bodies of Hannah Witheridge and David Miller, both 24, arrived in Bangkok late yesterday for forensic examination.

The victims were found naked and beaten to death early on Monday near a beachside bungalow on Koh Tao, a popular diving spot near Koh Pha-ngan. A bloodied hoe was discovered 35 metres from the murder scene.

Three male Myanmar workers were held for questioning, but ruled out of the investigation yesterday afternoon, southern regional police commander Panya Mamen told AFP.

"They were very far from the scene ... it was probably not them," he said, adding that DNA samples had been collected from the men. However, he did not give details of any further leads as the manhunt on the small, normally tranquil island stretched into a second day without an arrest.

Police have also cleared a number of British tourists who travelled with the victims of being involved.

Earlier yesterday, local TV news reports showed police officers searching several shacks belonging to Myanmar migrants on the island.

Yesterday, Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha said "We have to look into the behaviour of the other party too, because this kind of incident should not happen to anybody and it has affected our image," he told reporters, adding the authorities were working "swiftly" to find the killers.

Koh Tao, home to stunning white sand beaches and azure waters, is popular with divers but is smaller and more laid-back than neighbouring Koh Phangan—which draws hordes of backpackers to its hedonistic "full moon" party.

Later Prayuth said local people must tell "tourists when the safe times are to be outside, we have to help them understand".

Police had earlier said the pair had been seen partying at a local bar just hours before they died.

Police sources said police had found a pair of blood-stained jeans and four iPhones - two of which had screens that were cracked - in a search of nine rooms occupied by six migrants yesterday.

The country is desperate to avoid further damage to the nation's lucrative tourism industry, which has been battered in recent months after a prolonged political crisis ended in a coup.

The army swiftly blanketed the country with a curfew and strict martial law, frightening off visitors.

Britain says Thailand is the country where its citizens are second most likely to require consular assistance if they visit, behind the Philippines.

There were 389 deaths of British nationals in Thailand in the year to March 2013 -- about one for every 2,400 British visitors or residents—although that figure includes natural causes.

This is the most laughable thing I read about this appalling attack. First response? Blame foreigners because Thailand is the land of smiles and certainly not a country of violent aggressive unaccountable males who value their can of leo beer more than they do a life of someone else. This is a land of happiness where everyone smiles, is pleasant and helpful, and nothing every goes wrong except when the nasty foreigners cause trouble.

There's no hope for Thailand whilst this level of hypocrisy and mendacity continues unabated propped up by the covens of fawning mothers with their "somchai can no no wrong" attitude of raising their kids.

My opinion of this is that a somchai (highly likely to be related to a copper either through blood or graft money) took a shine to the girl and when he started following her about in the soppy ignorant manner this chickenheads do, the British lad told him to fuck off. This was too much for his honour to stand so he viciously murdered both of them. His mum most likely spent a couple of hours cleaning the blood off of him and his clothes, telling him he is a good boy before calling some copper to make it all go away, which it will, and some token cambodian or burmese chap will be chucked in prison leaving Somchai free to kill again with complete impunity.

All the government cares about is the last vestiges of their tourism industry.

The investigation has been corrupted it seems by political interference. Instead of a methodical examination of the scene, the taking of statements and a thorough island wide canvassing of the entire population including establishing who were present but have since left, we have this absurd and quite preposterous situation in which preferred suspects have been targeted because of flimsy circumstantial evidence or as a consequence of their non Thai ethnicity.

It's a disgrace but scarcely unusual among a people whose incompetence is perhaps only exceeded by their stupidity and xenophobia. That their so called prime minister has deemed that the tourist victims contributed to their own demise because they acted like tourists in a place promoted by TAT as an idyllic desert island destination is quite simply obscene in its crassness and redolent of a grotesque insensitivity scarcely human in its origin. That this same brute should then whine about the so- called image of Thailand, a country which is renown worldwide for its prostitution and corruption, without expressing one iota of sympathy for the deceased's families is surely all the evidence one needs to confirm that some Thai are not on the same evolutionary scale as we more civilised folk.

Frankly, Thailand is beyond redemption.

Well the guy is an army general. Spend most of his career commanding infantry troops. He's not a social worker with a list of attended sensitivity courses on his CV... Surprised there was no order given to shoot a few migrant labourers ....just to show the world that this matter is being taken seriously.

..and of course the police get promotion not by proving themselves able or competent but by how much they can pay. A policeman's status is not based on ability or past success but by how many people he commands...or who knows him.

won't there be glee from the General and co if this latest one pans out:

British Friend Called Back to Koh Tao for More Questions

A British traveller named as Christopher Alan Ware is being questioned again by police investigating the savage murder of two British tourists, Phuketwan learned today from police sources.

DNA samples are expected to reveal today whether Ware is a prime suspect or whether several Burmese remain under suspicion for the slayings of Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24.

Ware left the holiday island of Koh Tao yesterday but returned this morning in response to a request from police. Later, he was taken to the beach where the murder took place.

Today brought more unusual twists in the pursuit of the killer or killers.

Region 8 Police Commander Panya Mamen told Phuketwan: ''David Miller's luggage contains a pair of bloodstained pants, which adds to the mystery.

''There was also blonde hair on a mobile telephone police have now located.''

It's understood that Miller and Ware shared a room at the Ocean View resort, where Hannah Witheridge was also staying.

Doctors have been asked to determine whether cuts on Ware's hands are old wounds or fresh cuts. A hoe was used to kill the British travellers.
