Rubber cultivation and plantations will definitely be subjected to zoning but when it will be enforced is yet to be decided, said National Council for Peace and Order chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha on Friday evening.
Rubber was one of the subjects General Prayuth talked about during his weekly address to the nation.
He told rubber growers to be realistic that they could no longer ask for government subsidies everytime rubber price has dropped substantially. He said no countries in the world could afford subsidizing farm products for good.
General Prayuth pointed out that many countries had increased rubber growing and several countries which are rubber buyers had started rubber cultivation in poor countries. With more rubber yield, rubber price will come down in accordance with the law of supply and demand and, therefore, rubber growers must understand this fact, he said.
Rubber growers, said the general, can expect for some profits from sale of their rubber but they should not expect to make huge profits.
He stressed the need to regulate the supply and demand sides of rubber and zoning is a means to keep cultivation under check.
Regarding the idea of using rubber in road construction, General Prayuth noted that only 5 percent of rubber was needed as construction material which is very small. Talks are being held with business entrepreneurs about converting natural rubber into more value-added productions such as rubber gloves to increase domestic demand for rubber.
