Thai Passports 'Very Hard' To Forge: Officials

Thai Passports 'Very Hard' To Forge: Officials

Mr. Luigi Maraldi, an Italian citizen whose lost passport has been forged by one of MH370's passengers, posed with a police officer in Phuket province, 9 March 2014

(13 March) In the wake of evidence that two passengers on a missing Malaysian Airlines flight have boarded the plane with fake passports, the authorities have told the Thais to rest assured that their passports are very hard to forge.

Concern over security of passports and immigration in Thailand was raised after the two real holders of the forged passports told media they had lost their passports in Thailand.

However, the Department of Consular Affairs has released a statement today that the authorities have not encountered any single case of forged Thai passport ever since its launch of E-Passport system in 2001.

The procedure of issuing Thai passports is accompanied with high levels of anti-forgery mechanism, the statement claimed, which corresponds to standard required by international authorities, such as the inclusion of biometrics data of the passport holders.

The statement also reminds the public that the passports used to board the missing flight MH370 were forgeries of foreign passports, not Thai ones.

"Ever since we began the program of electronic passports in 2001, we have procured over 10 million passports," the statement said, "No case of forged Thai passports has been reported".

    Outside of the Thai self-importance....
Contemporary passports are nearly impossible to duplicate legitimately.

Er my European passport seems hard to forge but as we know everyone wants to be Irish I would imagine it is always possible to forge things. Just becomes more techi and expensive.

There is no document in the world that cannot be forged. However, to do it convincingly requires skill and application although most forgers work according to the requirement. Does one need to defeat scanning and the eye of a good immigration officer from the developed world or is the aim to get by a chickenhead third world moron so much up his arse he couldn't spot a one legged man in an arse kicking competition?

That the Thai report no attempts to forge their passport is as meaningful as the fact that to date Bangladesh also records l;ittle document abuse.

Like the man said, why the fuck would you?

To be fair, one wouldn't be able to spot much whilst being up someone's arse, even his own...

And are these competitions held in Pattaya?...

Many countries do. It's not unusual. Most new EU passport photos are black and white, even if you send them colour photos. It's not just the image that's important these days, it's the biometrics.

When my Mrs came to Canada. The RCMP could not decipher her driving licence. Could not even figure out which country it was from. Very nice about it but eventually someone ruled that she had to get a new one. When she saw the book and the stages required she never bothered. Was quite taken aback that you coulda not just "buy" one!

    Photo on passport is b & w

    BUT

when applying, no silly little 2 x 2" photos acceptable.

Had to be high quality digital image:

Dimensions: Minimum 900 pixels wide x 1200 pixels high -- maximum 4500 pixels wide x 6000 pixels high
File size: Greater than 500kb and less than 10MB

Your photo must be in colour when it's uploaded.

Your photo will be incorporated into the page containing the security chip in the front of your passport but it will be in black and white.

The colour version of your photo is stored electronically on the security chip itself.

I've seen Ms O'Graph's passport with b&w image scanned at immigration - almost full screen sized colour image is shown

    and the reason for b & w - security:

The new photos are now in black and white.
The reason for that change is that black and white photographs are the only ones that can be laser engraved for extra security.
Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy says the security features in the new style ePassport will make it extremely difficult for anyone to make counterfeit passports. "It's secure, it's got about 50 security features in it, it's about the same price as the existing one, we've got to keep ahead of these fraudsters"

When I opened my account with SCB the counter clerk read my passport (UK and Northern Ireland) and just entered my nationality as Irish.

Whenever I conduct business with them now I am forced to tell them that I am Irish when asked for my identity.

Perhaps that explains why there are apparently so many Irish passport holders....

A Thai once told me that it used to be common for Thais to go to the US get visa card and the rest while living there and run up debt then come back to Thailand change their name and get a new passport with their new details. Voila, all that debt is gone! Easy money if that were possible. Who knows. If they never plan to return to the US, I wouldn't doubt that some might just max all their cards out then come back to live in Thailand.

Ha ha, welcome to Canada. To be fair, my UAE drivers' license is all in Arabic except for my name and the dates.

Too funny. Farang are all the same anyway, chai mai?

It's been known for quite a long time that Thailand is known for forged passports - of people from other countries. The numpty in the article has completely missed the point.

They used to have people offering forged documents on Kao San road. I remember walking along the road and see a few items displayed. Most of it was press IDs and other things like that. They must have had people down there doing passports, too. A life of crime was much easier in the past.

You might be right, natalie8. He didn't say that no Thai passports have ever been forged and used but only that forged Thai passports have never been detected. That might mean that the forgeries were good!

Does anyone know if the biometric data in passports can be read by authortities in foreign countries or is it only your home country that can acces it?

The cops leave them alone as they do not fake Thai Id and Thai passport, just foreign stuff like student id and driving licences, they can't do holograms on stuff so not very good

That photo wouldn't be allowed in the UK. You're not allowed to smile - simply not realistic in the UK these days. It's supposed to be "with a neutral expression and your mouth closed".

I presume that is a smile?

I have an answer for that for the UAE, but I have a migraine right now and I can't think straight. I'll come back in the morning.
