A 34 year-old Tanzanian suspected con-artist was arrested by Pattaya Police in Soi Buakoaw on Thursday afternoon after he was spotted by one of his alleged victims.
Police arrived and arrested Mr. Gailly Sunday Mwakibinga who was then taken to Pattaya Police Station.
He was spotted by one of his alleged victims, Khun Muniporn aged 54, who owns a Beer Bar close to the Maprachan Reservoir in East Pattaya. The suspect visited her bar on 13th January and spent the night there and became very friendly with the victim. He persuaded her that the time was right to exchange Thai Baht into US Dollars and she agreed to give him 300,000 Baht for the US Dollar equivalent.
To raise the funds for the transaction, she borrowed 130,000 Baht against her car. This money along with 170,000 Baht she had saved was taken to a nearby Motel where she agreed to meet the suspect. When she arrived in the room, she was sprayed in the face with an unknown substance and fell unconscious. When she awoke she found the 300,000 Baht had gone along with the suspect.
Police determined that a similar case occurred in Udon Thani Province where Khun Tunchinok aged 42, a bar owner, was also persuaded by the suspect to hand over 300,000 Baht, which she raised by borrowing against a Land Title Deed. The transaction was completed in a local Motel and she also fell unconscious after being sprayed in the face with an unknown substance. This case occurred 4 months ago and the victim confirmed via phone that the suspect was the same man who committed the alleged crime.
