Hammer-wielding wife beater arrested

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in Bangkok for assaulting his wife with a hammer, an iron and a diamond cutter on Jan 4.

Pol Col Komsan Tangchui, superintendent of Lat Krabang police station in Bangkok, said the suspect was named as Chatchai Sappakong, from Kanchanaburi province. He was arrested in an apartment unit in the Sathon area. The name of his wife, who worked in a hotel, was withheld.

Chatchai told police that before the assault, he called his wife to return home to Lat Krabang to help him take care of their daughter. When his wife returned, they had a heated argument.

The suspect said he started attacking his wife because he could not control himself and was angry that she left him and their daughter on their own for about a month.

The husband confessed that he used a hammer to pound his wife's head and body several times, an iron to press on her face and a diamond cutter to poke one of her eyes.

Chatchai said he went into hiding because he thought his wife was dead.

However, the woman was only injured and was able to help police identify her husband.
