The gay gene in isan is more deeply rooted than I thought. Not that I have any problem with that. It does make you wonder though, if here is any connection to the Bangkok "ladyboy" phenomenon. Just saying.

I dont really see the harm in it, the people have deep rooted belifes in ghosts and spirits, there is a local fear, a wise and trusted woman offers possible protection. It is certainly preferable to the wicked old hags in the West that that try to usher troubled people into the church and offer salvation in return for their unconditional devotion to a bigger nonsense.

Yes i am known as the village heretic !

Perfectly normal and nothing of special interest to my Wife. I fact she added to this by explaining that under the shirt a Phalic symbol is mandatary. 2 coconuts (balls) and a penis shape, tamarine branch, morters petal,a large penis symbol.
    Nothing to do with politics.

I rather think Dan is losing it, stuck up there among the hottentots manufacturing his bricks from whatever wattle he can daub.

To not make the connection between the obvious coincidence would be poor journalism and for goodness sakes, for once and for all can we please, please agree that the PT is a construct of Khun Thaksin as indeed is the red shirt rabble which he directly financed and organised. Clearly, there is therefore a link between the two notwithstanding the fact that as a rabble it has drawn from the ranks of fellow travellers and the like.

Thailand is medieval. And in any society of that ilk it requires a serf class, denoted by its profound ignorance, for the provision of a compliant labour force too stupid and dimwitted to organise itself into much else. Sprinkle into that mix a healthy dose of superstition, poor hygiene, a diet more suited to scavenging wildlife, an addiction to rudimentary alcohol and indifferent healthcare and, hey prest, we have today's Isaan. That mortality rates may fluctuate, discounting the as yet unreported possibility the alleged deaths were occasioned by mere foolish recklessness tyoical of humans without cognitive ability, is scarcely surprising but to attribute it to evil spirits perhaps affords an insight into just how primitive most Isaanites in fact are.

Some years ago an article appeared in the BP reporting the antics of a village population near the border with Cambodia coping with a catalogue of misforune that had beset them all. The local witch doctor diagnosed an evil spirit had possessed a local black dog and recommended canicide as a solution. Thus the villagers were driven to slaughtering its doggie population. Initially, the purge was focused upon dark coloured mutts but as they got into the swing of things it seems they got a bit carried away and topped the lot.

And these people have the vote?

Probably to stay away from them. If you as a reasonably smart person from the West are surrounded by nothing but people like this, a negative feedback is inevitable.

Thai-Rak-Thai and its clones are the ones who introduced some reforms to the backward society of Thailand. A rudimentary healthcare for the poor, rapidly rising minimum wages, rice-buying schemes bringing security to small-time farmers, etc. The question is, do those ignorant people deserve any gifts handed out for voting for parties set up by a few individuals to promote their interests? Is there the prospect of those people becoming less ignorant and superstitious, and workers delivering better than a shit of a job what would justify larger minimum wages?

So, exactly why does the ghost stay away from houses with red shirts?

Other than that, the whole story makes perfectly good sense to me...

I have a T shirt that I think is possessed by evil spirits because whenever I put it on I seem to do wicked things. One time whilst wearing it I scratched the word "twatt" on my neighbours car with a screwdriver.Another time with it on I pulled up all his bedding plants and poured engine oil into his fish pond.It was in the wash when I pushed dog shit through his letter box but it was obviously still exerting its malign influence from the clothes line.

A few have popped in in my ville. First one in a house owned by a person who saw them in another ville. Found out the reason. A female ghost killed by her husband is exacting revenge on all males, young and old. Some houses have one for each male in family. Others just one but most have none.

I asked around and found no one knows why red is required. Specifics on how a red shirt will deter a ghost are unknown but irrelevant. Typical answer is "many people are doing it so it must be effective because no family males have died since the shirts went up." Hard to argue with that logic.

Nearly every house in our Village has a red T shirt hanging up.I asked the wife why we don't have one ??.....She told me " Farang are not scared of Thai ghosts and also she doesn't want me to think she is crazy "

    Right on both counts

Village I live in is decorated in red shirts, sweaters, jackets etc. my house included. I don't believe in Ghosts and Spirits (except Hong Thong) but in the end, if they believe it helps, why not. I'm still here, so it must work
