BANGKOK - AS THAIS nationwide celebrated the Thai New Year, Songkran, yesterday, Bangkok's Central World Shopping Plaza claimed success in beating a Spanish record for the world's largest water pistol fight.

In September 2007, in Spain, 2,671 participants set the record for the largest water pistol fight which lasted five minutes.

Yesterday in Bangkok, Central World and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) organisers gathered 3,471 participants in the Guinness World Record Songkran Festival 2011 and fired water pistols at each other non-stop for ten minutes, doubling the record.

At Bangkok City Hall, BMA Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra led city officials and public members in a ceremony where 10 senior monks chanted and people offered alms to 184 monks.

In the evening, the plaza hosted a light and sound show, musical concert, cultural show, and a trade fair for goods from Bangkok's 50 districts. Thais and foreigners took part in the water-splashing celebration amid security provided by 150 police.

Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva offered a Songkran wish for Thais to be happy and safe, while also urging motorists to drive carefully during this period, notorious for road accidents.

MARICOPA, AZ - Bangkok, Thailand set the world record for the most participants in a water gun fight in 2011, but the City of Maricopa is hoping to change that Saturday night.

The event originally scheduled for Independence Day has been moved to Saturday, July 7 due to weather issues.

Aside from traditional live music, fireworks, water slides, competitions and fun for the whole family, there will also be a huge water gun fight hoping to knock Bangkok off the charts.

The City of Maricopa is known for its Signature Events that attract over 5,000 people each time.

Only 3, 471 people attended the Bangkok water gun fight, taking the Guinness Book of World Records title of "The World's Largest Squirt Gun Fight."

“There are a few opportunities to get in the Guinness Book of World Records,” said Will Dunn, the director of Action Alliance Network, in a press release. “Families will remember this for a lifetime.”

The first 5,000 people who come to Pacana Park in Maricopa for this American celebration will receive a free mini-squirt gun.

The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. and admission is free for all events.
Businesses and food vendors will be in attendance offering delicious food, treats and drinks.

Get ready for round two of Independence Day fun and feel free to bring your own squirt guns, too- you don’t want to miss out!
