Actually a big earthquake that causes little damage or loss of life is actually a good thing. Read this quote from a seismologist that uses a great analogy.
So if it's released a massive amount of built up tension with minimal impact, that can't be a bad thing.Kerry Sieh, a US professor who has studied the fault for more than ten years, yesterday likened it to a length of rope in an imaginary tug of war between a group of men and an elephant.
"One by one, two by two, the men are getting worn out and are letting go of the rope. That puts more stress on each of the remaining men," he said. "Who knows which one will let go next, or whether they will let go all at once?"

Tsunami Alert Sounded in Thailand
UPDATE : 11 April 2012
An earthquake of up to magnitude 8.9 has struck under the sea off Indonesia's Aceh province and a tsunami warning has been issued to countries across the Indian Ocean.
An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.9 has struck under the sea off Indonesia's northern Aceh province.
The tremor could be felt in Thailand's Phuket and Phang-nga provinces.
It was initially reported as 8.9 magnitude but was later revised down to 8.7 by the US Geological Survey.
An aftershock of 8.1 magnitude off the northwest coast of the Sumatra Island was reported again at around 6 P.M.
Thailand's Natural Disaster Warning Center has warned residents in the Andaman coastal provinces of Phuket, Phang-nga, Satun and Krabi to move to higher grounds and closely monitor updates from the center.
The Information and Communication Technology Ministry has ordered locals in tsunami-prone area to evacuate.
News reports also said the tremor could be felt in many coastal provinces, such as Songkhla, Phuket, Satun and Chumphon, as well as on some highrises in Bangkok.
Locals in Phuket, Krabi and Phangnga were reporting seawater receding but there is still confusion as to whether this is ordinary sea tide receding.
Locals' evacuation is proceeding smoothly although there are reports of traffic in Phuket Province as people scramble to higher ground.
Mobile phone communication in the South is at full capacity right now but land lines and radio transmissions have been prepared.
In Phuket Province, the airport has been closed and all inbound and outbound flights have been canceled.
All aircraft have been evacuated to higher ground.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra called an urgent Cabinet meeting at 7 PM to follow up on the issue.
She has dispatched the Natural Resources and Environment minister, the Science and Technology minister and the ICT minister to travel to the South immediately to follow up on the situation.
At approximately 7.30PM, the NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has reduced the Tsunami Watch Area, Thailand is no longer in the Watch Area. The remaining five countries on the Watch Area include; Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and the United Kingdom.
At 7.55PM the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has lifted its warning for all areas of the Indian Ocean. According to the center the latest sea level readings indicated that the threat of a tsunami has diminished or is over for most areas. The center has canceled its tsunami warning for the five remain countries mentioned above.

Huge aftershock hits Indonesia
Huge aftershock hits Indonesia

Zeenews Bureau
New Delhi: A tsunami alert is currently in place across the Indian Ocean region following two major quakes off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province.
A powerful 8.6 magnitude quake, initially measured to be 8.9 on the Richter scale, hit off the west coast of Northern Sumatra at 08:38 GMT, sending panic-stricken people in the island nation as well as in other neighbouring countries on the streets and raising fears of a disastrous tsunami as in 2004. The depth of the quake was reported to be 22.9 kilometres.
Several strong aftershocks have so far hit the archipelago, including an 8.2 aftershock that struck just over two hours later, at 10:43 GMT.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Aceh.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued fresh tsunami warnings for the entire Indian Ocean region after the aftershocks, including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.
Authorities in Indonesia said there were reports of sea-levels rising off Aceh, but by less than a metre (3.3 feet).
Some residents were seen crying in Aceh, where memories of a 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 people in the province alone, are still raw. Others screamed "God is great" as they poured from their homes or searched frantically for separated family members.
Indonesia's disaster management agency said power was down in Aceh province and people were gathering on high ground as sirens warned of the danger.
"The electricity is down, there are traffic jams to access higher ground. Sirens and Koran recitals from mosques are everywhere," said Sutopo, spokesman for the agency.
Several countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, issued their own tsunami warnings and people near the coast in six Thai provinces were ordered to evacuate to higher ground. Authorities shut down the international airport in the Thai beach resort province of Phuket.
India later withdrew the tsunami warning, saying there was no likelihood of tsunami tidal waves being formed anywhere in the Indian Ocean region.
India had initially issued tsunami alert for its coastal regions, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, after tremors were felt in its southern and northeastern states.
The quake was also felt in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where many people in the city's commercial Motijheel district left their offices and homes in panic and ran into the streets. No damage or causalities were reported.
In Male, the capital of the Maldives, buildings were evacuated.
Sri Lanka issued a tsunami warning across the island and the disaster management centre asked residents on the coast to move inland to avoid being hit by any large waves.
In the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, nervous crowds gathered on the streets after the strong quake.
The initial quake was a strike-slip, not a thrust quake, according to experts. In a strike slip quake, the earth moves horizontally rather than vertically and doesn't displace large volumes of water.
They were still analyzing the aftershock.
"When I first saw this was an 8.7 near Sumatra, I was fearing the worst," Roger Musson, seismologist at the British geological survey who has studied Sumatra's fault lines, noting one of the initial reported magnitudes for the quake. "But as soon as I discovered what type of earthquake it was, then I felt a lot better."
The first tremor was felt in Malaysia, where it caused high-rise buildings to shake for about a minute, and in Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh and India.
A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on December 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, most of them in Aceh.
Last year, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake caused a tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan, killing some 19,000 people.

A friend is in Jakarta - (actually on a high floor in a luxury condo), and is milking this on Facebook by giving his thick American-based friends the impression that he may be in some jeopardy of the tsunami.
He's not actually saying that he's in danger - but certainly not setting people straight when they are 'offering prayers for ya buddy'
He's now going to appear on CNBC New York, presumably talking kak.
I'm desperate to point this out to the sheep on his Facebook, but no doubt, FB being the home of narcissism, he would delete me instantly for lese majeste.

Tsunami watch lifted from the Indian Ocean
THE tsunami watch around the Indian Ocean has been lifted.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre cancelled the watch for most areas of the Indian Ocean about four hours after a massive earthquake struck in Indonesia in waters off Aceh province.
It was still in effect for Indonesia, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and the island territory of Diego Garcia.
The massive earthquake triggered tsunami fears across the Indian Ocean sending people in coastal cities fleeing to high ground.
A strong aftershock nearly three hours later sparked a new wave of panic.
Indonesia’s government responded by issuing a fresh tsunami warning.
Some residents were crying in Aceh, where memories of a 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 people in the province alone, are still vivid. Others screamed “God is great” as they poured from their homes or searched frantically for separated family members.
The US Geological Survey said the first 8.6-magnitude quake was centred 20 miles beneath the ocean floor around 270 miles from Aceh province.
That prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii to issue a tsunami watch for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Burma, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.
A wave measuring less than 30 inches high, rolled to Indonesia’s coast.
There were no other signs of serious damage

BANGKOK, April 11 (Reuters) - Thailand's Phuket International Airport reopened on Wednesday after the government lifted a tsunami warning on six of the country's Andaman coast provinces, an official said.
The airport in the southern Thai island, a popular destination for foreign tourists, was initially shut down and all flights diverted to nearly Krabi, but normal service would resume as soon as possible, the official told Reuters by telephone.
The government lifted the warning on Wednesday night after disaster prevention experts determined there was no longer a tsunami risk after a powerful earthquake and aftershocks off the coast of Indonesia.

AUSTRALIANS in Thailand and Indonesia have told of mass panic as people pushed and shoved their way out of shopping centres when last night's earthquake hit and tsunami warnings sounded. Fearing a repeat of the disastrous Boxing Day tsunami, locals deserted their shops and frantically rounded up their children to seek higher ground.
Brisbane woman Jodie Schafer, on holiday in Patong, Thailand, with boyfriend Anthony Ambrosio, said she was on the lower ground floor of the Junceylon shopping centre at 3.45pm when people started running for the escalators.
Latest reports on the earthquake
"All of a sudden people started running in droves up stairs, escalators,'' she said. "People were pushing, shoving. We were asking what was happening, but the locals didn't say they just packed up their shops and fled.
"The other tourists were shouting that there was an earthquake and tsunami warning.''

She said they ran for the internal stairs and made their way to the roof with other shoppers to look for any signs of incoming water.
"Have been here in the sweltering sun since,'' Ms Schafer said. "Now (we are) currently in search of water and the whole shopping centre is deserted. Shop attendants have abandoned their shops.''
Australian Mark Pendlebury, who runs Phuket Sail Tours, said he was on his boat out at sea when the tsunami alert sounded back on land.
"All the coastal residences have been evacuated and the eight people on today's tour are at my house now my house is on high ground,'' he said.
"People in Australia should be quite confident that their friends and family here are being looked after.
"The Thais are set up to deal with this. They have regular tsunami drills and have had for the past few years.''
Mr Pendlebury said he heard about the earthquake and tsunami alert via a phone call from a colleague.
He said he belonged to a local Rotary club that was moving into gear to assist authorities with disaster management.
"We'll be working with the tourist police to help any tourists that need it but I think at the moment this is all very precautionary,'' he said.
"I think it is quite likely that we're not in danger but we need to be prepared just in case.
"I was here for the last tsunami and hopefully it was the last.''
WavePark Mentawai employee Henny Jaslim said she felt the earthquake hit in the afternoon while her children were at school.
WavePark is one of many surfing safari companies operating throughout the Mentawai Islands that cater to thousands of Australians each year.
"We were told there was a tsunami warning but we have passed that now,'' she said.
"The earthquake went for a long time but it didn't seem as bad as the last one. I was very worried because my children were at school.
"We have a lot of Australians here surfing with us but they are all safe on the island.''
In Bali's Legian Beach, former Paddington resident Robyn Reid, who owns Bali Beach Shack, said her diners were oblivious to the drama.
