This was the 2004 one, where masses of water were displaced vertically. (I'll post twice as I don't know if animated gifs work).

the location of this quake is further south and to the west from the Boxing day tsunami. Unlikely Thailand will get any waves.

But Bruce Presgrave of the USGS later told the BBC that the nature of this quake made it less likely a tsunami would be generated, as the earth had moved horizontally, rather than vertically, therefore had not displaced large volumes of water.
    hope he is right

Depends on whether or not there are any other pop ups along the same fault, which was apparently what happened last time. Better to play it safe.

Now we know who's to blame...

British PM visits Indonesia as earthquake hits

    By Shawn Langlois
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday continued his four-day tour of Asia, bringing his trade mission to the capital city of Jakarta the same day as an 8.7-magnitude earthquake rattled the broader region. A tsunami warning was in effect for countries across the Indian Ocean after the shaker slammed the waters off Indonesia's Aceh province, which had already been devastated by a 9.1-magnitude quake and tsunami back in 2004. According to media reports, the quake was felt as far afield as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Check Google Earth to see tectonic plate edges.

    Also see:
Latest Earthquakes in the World - Past 7 days

Burma, Sri Lanka and Sumatra will cop most of the tsunami.

It's the same tectonic plates moving as in 2004, but not the same type of movement, probably a smaller wave.

A look, another fucking mussie lover.

A tsunami watch was issued for roughly 22 countries across the Indian Ocean after a large earthquake hit waters off Indonesia on Wednesday, triggering widespread panic as residents along coastlines fled to high ground in cars and on the backs of motorcycles.

Some were crying. Others screamed "God as great'' as they poured from their homes.
Sounds like Allah is in a win-win situation here.

Thailand is one of the country’s on the Tsunami watch alert.
Al Jazeera’s Aela Callan, reporting from Bangkok, sent this update:
"We are hearing in some of those southern provinces there are now tsunami alerts sounding. Thailand is quite prepared for this, they hold drills regularly. We are hearing that the tsunami could hit those provinces - there are six that have been put on alert now -it could hit anytime in the next few minutes to the next hour. "

Sri Lanka braces for 10:40GMT/17:40 Thailand.

Sri Lanka issued a tsunami warning across the island on Wednesday and the disaster management centre asked residents on the coast to move inland to avoid being hit by any large waves.

A government statement said waves could hit the island's eastern coast by about 10:40 GMT and urged an orderly evacuation of the coastal strip.
India has closed the port of Chennai.

BANGKOK—Thailand issued an evacuation order Wednesday for its Andaman coast, a popular tourist destination, after a massive earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami alert.
Thailand’s National Disaster Warning Centre advised people in the area to move to higher places and stay as far away as possible from the sea.

This is why we need a Teakdoor app. The Phuket locals could keep us posted while they're scarpering up to the Golden Buddha.

Wouldn't be surprised if there are a few casualties from the traffic.

^ Why do you think the initial warning came from the Pacific Warning centre?

All the boys around the Indian Ocean keep bitching about who would pay for/run an Indian Ocean version.

(6:24 a.m ET) Indonesia's president says there is no immediate threat of a tsunami from earthquake. He was speaking at a joint press conference in Jakarta with visiting UK Prime Minister David Cameron, ITN's Gary Gibbon tells CNN.

8.33pm: Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says a tsunami measuring 17 centimetres has been generated in the Indian Ocean and is headed for Aceh.

    (Not sure about time zones).

    It's over.

The Reuters news agency, quoting an official at a tsunami warning center, has reported the total vertical measurement of the tsunami wave, according to monitoring gauges, was 35 cm (13.8 inches), making the height 17 cm (6.7 inches).
"It doesn't look like a major tsunami," Victor Sardina, a geophysicist on duty at the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said. "But we are still monitoring as tsunamis come in waves."

Judging by the positions of the two off Aceh, I'm guessing it's moved a few cm south west....

Really helps build your confidence in a crisis situation. Cut off the phones and then close the airport. I dont believe all phone carriers have a problem as my kids are texting to friends in Phuket.. I do believe its over. A bad quake indeed but far enough out to sea and not on tectonic plates that would cause devastation. Lets see what unfolds.
