Normally the MO of blokes like this. Places like Pattaya and Las Vegas seem to be the final destination of choice for the terminally-ill, heartbroken, or bankrupt to spunk away their last breath and money before checking out.

Eitherway it is very sad when someone is that down hearted and their mind is in so much termoil that they jump of a building , i would take an over dose of something than jump of a high building. RIP.

What I find so strange is that someone who is so depressed they want to commit suicide can plan and execute their own death half way across the globe

Sadly, these suicides occur far too often, in Pattaya.

A 52 year old American resident appears to have committed suicide by jumping from the balcony of his 25th floor apartment in Central Pattaya. Late on Sunday Night, Police and rescue services were called to the View Talay 6 Condominium located next to Central Festival Pattaya Beach following the death of Mr. Phillip Joseph Glynn. His body was found by security guards at the base of the building. It was determined he occupied a 25th floor apartment where evidence of the suicide was collected, including a letter apparently written by Mr. Glynn to his sister Shirley Glynn which stated that he was mentally and physically ill and the letter finished with him saying goodbye to individual family members. Police found no evidence of foul play inside his apartment and the American Embassy in Bangkok has been informed. A post mortem examination at the Police Forensic Institute is now underway and arrangements are now being made for Mr. Glynn’s body to be sent to America for burial.

He would not have been going any faster than a European since gravitational acceleration is the same in either case and his impact velocity would not have been approaching terminal velocity (which would require approximately a 100 storey drop) so drag coefficient from air (which would favour the American) would be negligble.

He would likely have made more of a mess though.

Are you sure? I would have thought it would take the chap something in the order of 15 seconds to reach his terminal velocity. According to my calculation he would have to fall something akin to 2,600 ft. The building would certainly have to be higher than 100 storeys.

Terminal velocity of a human is about 75 m/s^2 which is your optimal velocity in a balcony dive situation

Gravitational pull is 9.8 m/s2

It will take about 75/9.8 = ~8s to reach terminal velocity.

Velocity after falling for T seconds is given by V = 9.8 T

To work out the minumum floor to jump from to reach terminal velocity you need to take the integral from 0 to 8 of V = 9.8*T wrt T

which, using the general formula for integrating a polynomial:



gives (9.8*T^2)/2 (C will be zero - the speed you were travelling at when you stepped over the balcony)

Taking the integral from 0 to 8 seconds gives a distance of about 300 metres to reach terminal velocity which is about 100 floors so you really need to jump from the very top of a very expensive hotel if you want to check out with minimum margin for error.
