Crash kills nine in northern Thailand
Bangkok (dpa) - A tour bus crashed head-on into a pickup truck, killing all eight people on the truck and one child who was hurled out of the bus by the impact, police and hospital sources said Monday.
The accident occurred on the Friendship Highway in Ban Pai, Khon Kaen, at about 11:10 p.m. Sunday night, police said.
The impact of the collision imbedded the pickup truck into the front of the bus.
All eight passengers on the truck died instantly, and one 9-year-old girl died en route to Sirinthorn Hospital in Khon Kaen, 380 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, after being hurled out of the bus by the impact, said Sirithorn nurse Sudarat Daosri.
"Both of the girl's parents were also injured in the crash and are currently undergoing treatment," said Daosri.
Deadly automobile accidents are common on the Friendship Highway, the main road linking Thailand's populous north-east region to the rest of the country.
