    Tax free container into Thailand

I am soon to have a business visa and a work permit and have been told that upon obtaining this for the first time I am entitled to 1 tax free container for shipping my belongings to Thailand.

Does anybody know any more about this and can I put vehicles into my container if it is indeed true? Also, Would I still get it if the visa and permit is obtained while I am already in Thailand on a O visa?

    Cheers, Dirk.

1 vehicle that you have owned for 2 years I think, but there is a real short time period allowed on entering Thailand initially and getting your work permit, I know most people don't bother in the end due to the time limit expiring, for a Thai that has been abroad I think they get a year time limit.

That's fine, I've always been on tourist visas until september last year when I obtained multiple entry non-imm O visa. Not married to a Thai, not over 50, just asked for it at a notoriously loose immigration office, paid my 100 quid and got it back within 3 days. Simple.

However I'll be getting a B visa so the work permit will be under that visa. Does that all sound cosher?

Pretty sure you will find you are already over the time limit or will be once you get your work permit.

That's fine, the staff can do all the work, ha!

Is it still working if I'm not on a wage?

In fact, is my visa not technically still a tourist visa, having to leave the country every 3 months? I tried to check in at an immigration office and they said I had to leave the country to get 3 more months. Am I just a tourist, therefore not entering thailand with work permit rights until I have my B visa?

Tourists use tourists visas, you can get a work permit on an O visa, if you are working regardless of being paid you are supposed to have a work permit, they even threatened to arrest tsunami volunteers if they didn't have work permits.

^Yep, doubt countries like Haiti are threatening to arrest people that are helping them for free as volunteers, but Thailand does.....

You can but you will pay imports tax on them at anywhere between 100 and 500% of whatever value Thai customs select as the value.

This is for Thai nationals who have lived abroad, is it not?

Otherwise, retiring farangs would be arriving with nice benz and jags rather than buying pick ups whilest here etc etc.

I'm pretty sure its the time factor that messes the whole idea up, I know several people that have brought in a load of personal possessions, but they came with the right visa and had a real short time period to do it all, none brought a car though.

^ Yes bringing personal possession is simple enough and doesn't attract any tax, clothes, books, washing machines, golf clubs- all ok.

Cars and fully assembled motorbikes - nooooooooooo!

Is this some exotic vehicle or is it a shed like a Ford Cortina?
Not that it matters, you will still get taxed heavily on either.

Dirty Dog, for clarification, are you stating there is a short time period to obtain a work permin or to take advantage of a tax free container?

I don't have a vehicle to import, but a friend wants to buy a BMW Z3 off a friend of his for very cheap. Obviously not worth my hassle.

I've no idea what a small container would cost from either UK or Oz, which my stuff is split between. Anyone?

And in fairness the cocksmoker that came up with this idea was told to fuck off by farang and Thai alike and promptly slunk back under his rock.

    Link?

A work permit is required for all types of work, even voluntary.

$US 2500 from Aus, to Klong Touy, other ports charge more for documentation and transport.

I came over on a retirement visa and my spouse on a return after living abroad for more that 2 years. We had 6 months after arrival to bring in a one time delivery of used personal items. We brought over a full 20 foot containers with such items. Car would have been taxed so we left the left hand steering car in the US. No problems with customs clearance as the freight forwarder handled all of that with info and manifest of contents provide by us. Customs decided that a fully assemble bicycle I brought over was not a personal item and I ended up paying something lie 400 baht tax. I paid no argument as they did not even open the container. Piece of cake. Info is all on the web page so suggest reading it to get full and actual info.... try going to: http://omnimoving.com/customsinfo/thailand.html

Its the best job here for a Thai (customs). If they think there's a way of getting money out of you they will. Especially as your new to this stuff here.

Few years back the British Gov't asked why a forty foot container of wheel chairs from a charity bound for Chang Mai sat in a where house for 18 months.

Answer.. No one had been in with a brown envelope so the lads at customs wouldn't let it out.
Do you know what nemesis means?

my cost for the 20 foot container door to door from East Coast USA to Ban Chang was just under $5K US. I wrapped the items that needed wrapping. The movers/freight forwarder, loaded the items onto the container, securred them, transported to the port in USA, received items at port in Thai, cleared customs, transported the items to residence in Ban Chang, unloaded, un wrapped, assembled a whole bunch of items, cleared the inventory sheets, placed items in location in the house, cleaned up all the residual trash. No items damaged or lost or stolen.

heck, I posted a thread about this some where on this forum.

hey you go try this (Retirement)https://teakdoor.com/the-teakdoor-lounge/42544-retirement-4.html beginning at post #70.
