    full time
i don't have a Degree and no work permit,

    question
Can i get a work permit if i have a letter from the school director?
    how does the tax work?
say 20.000 salary = how much tax deducted?
By the way i am married to a Thai and live here because of that.

Maybe a teacher here can be more specific, but as far as I'm aware no - at least not without a degree.

Again not entirely sure but my understanding is that there is a set 'minimum' assumed earnings depending on nationality that you are taxed on -- e.g. for Brits/Americans, say 50,000, irrespective of what you actually earn, which is then taxed at 20%

    General tax rates are:

    Taxable Income
    0 - 150,000 Exempt
    150,001 - 500,000 10%
    500,001 - 1,000,000 20%
    1,000,001 - 4,000,000 30%
    4,000,001 and over 37%

There is no tax on ThB 20,000 per month.

Ant sort of has the idea in that expats need to declare ThB 50,000 per month in order to obtain a work permit, but that does not apply to teachers. They are privileged in that they may earn less and continue to work here legally.

The 50,000b per month is for the extension of stay not the work permit, this figure (as mentioned above) is waived for teachers though.

I would say go for it if you are not currently occupied and if they get you the necessary paperwork or documentation.

Caveat: You will have to change your visa and get a work permit which means that if they fire you you'll have to surrender your work permit and technically leave the country within 7 days as your visa will be linked to your work permit. Unless the rules have changed.

Tax payable on ones salary can be calculated here

edit:actually the above link is not accurate just now as I think there is a discount applied to tax rates,a government incentive, something like that.

Why post in a thread when you know nothing about the question being asked? Thank heavens you can't legally work as a lawyer in Thailand.

As to the OP, you will need a teaching certificate in order to legally teach here, which you will not get.

I don't know "nothing" about it, the guy asked a question so I told him what I could.

I suppose I could've just been a terminally grumpy, cynical, miserable twat but then what would that have left you to do??

There is a ThB 30,000 annual allowance for every individual regardless of the source of income. A further maximum allowance of ThB 60,000 where the income is earned, plus a ThB 150,000 per annum tax-free band. Thus, ThB 30,000 + 60,000 + 150,000 = ThB 240,000 per annum.

Tell them yes but on condition that they get a WP prior to you starting work and pay all fees and expenses.

You don't speak Thai so let the school pull whatever strings are needed.
And don't start work on the promise of a WP, you want it in your hand.

To show that you are sincere and capable you can offer to work a summer camp.
I think you are allowed to teach English at a summer camp for 30 days with no WP and can get paid.
Sorry I don't have a link to confirm.

By may calculations (assuming op is single) he would be paying about 500b per month on his 20k salary but in coming to this figure I have not calculated social security contributions.

The tax tables are reproduced herewith. Add to the ThB 150,000 tax free band the annual personal allowance (assuming he is single) of ThB 30,000 and the 40% (maximum ThB 60,000) allowance for earned income and you have ThB 240,000 per annum tax free.

One of the other dark side forums has an FAQ covering teaching in thailand, visa's and work permits.

As for work permits, I believe that non imm O marrage visa allows you to apply for a work permit. the FAQ states that a degree is required for a WP as a teacher, but as with everything in thailand, manditary requirements are not always mandatory when the boss isn't about, people working out in the sticks and for well connected agencies have managed to get one.

So it looks like if you do go for the job, the school director needs to make it very clear in his supporting documentation that hes been looking very hard for a very long time and that you were the best he could get.

I have no knowledge of the tax laws, but I know quite a few salaried civil servants earning 20-35k/month, non of them pay much tax at all.... significantly less than a months salary per year

Officially, if you don't have a degree, you can't get a work permit. However, if your school director has some influence in the community, then he/she can move mountains. I'm sure if they want you, and you want a work permit then something can be arranged.

Since you will be paying no tax there is no need to file a Return, unless the Revenue Department send you one. Your school should provide a Tw50 form showing gross salary and NIL tax which is all you will be required to produce in official circles.

The least you can now do is post a picture on my fish thread.
