Now, I will admit to my ignorance now.

I didn't realise that there is a pact between Nth Korea and China, implying that if you attack Nth Korea, China is duty bound to defend Nth Korea.

It puts, for me, a whole new perspective on the Korean Peninsula and the region in general.

Apart from Trump's ego and his falling popularity in the US, why, on Earth, is Trump pushing regime change?

Japan doesn't wish it, Sth Korea is scared of it, nor does China desire it.

The USA is half a world away.

Are there hidden oil reserves tucked away in Nth Korea? ...

apparently the chief concern is that north korea will have the capacity to reach seattle with a missile in a couple of years time.

More like four years time unless you are privy to NK's actual missile delivery capabilities.

Did Trump forget he said this?

    .

Trump would talk to North Korea's Kim

    Wed May 18, 2016

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Tuesday he is willing to talk to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to try to stop Pyongyang's nuclear program, proposing a major shift in U.S. policy toward the isolated nation.

The presumptive Republican nominee declined to share details of his plans to deal with North Korea, but said he was open to talking to its leader.

"I would speak to him, I would have no problem speaking to him," he said.

    Rick ? ... Nah !

But there is a bit of substance to the thought.
Mr Wilder, a former CIA deputy assistant director for East Asia and the Pacific, told (Australian) Lateline that North Korea could have a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the US west coast within four years.
    The story is here.

Nope, only the consensus of several experts Neverna. Why are you bird dogging me again? Do you have to question everything I say? I guess these sources are incorrect?

Rickshopper, you questioned raycarey about being "privy to NK's actual missile delivery capabilities". To you, that was OK. But when I ask you the very same question, woah, I'm "bird dogging" you, whatever the fuck that means.

Of course, you are too thick to see the connection between my question and yours, even though they were only 4 minutes apart.

If the US backed off, would they change?
The Chinese proposal was that the Americans and South Koreans stop practicing the invasion of North Korea and the murder of the North Korean leadership and in return, North Korea would stop its nuclear and missile tests. The Americans rejected this.

But China needs the US (treasury bills and trade)and the US needs China (trade).

Much moreso than China needs North Korea.

    China won't militarily back NK.

The US and China are too interdependent.

They have a defence pact but the Chinese view is, I think, that North Korea's development of nuclear weapons means that they're not bound by it and they're clearly starting to think that Fatty the Third is much more of a liability than an asset. Their real interest is more that America should not be on their borders (which is fair enough) than that the regime should be maintained in power.

The Chinese could just invite fatty over, knock him off and instal a Chinese puppet government under their "protection". Get aid from the west to pay for the transition in NK. Problem solved.
