A mere film can be seized upon by those looking to incite violence, or the popular outrage exploited as a cover under which to instigate violence. A mere film can also be exploited by those looking to provoke such a reaction, by making and promoting it in the first place. Even in a supposedly sane part of the world, I have heard such seditionary stuff as 'Sesame Street' and 'Avatar' accused of having left wing political agenda's. So we should not underestimate the potential power or impact of a film, or any other media.

Where are ya, soup? Sounds a bit extreme for the Gulf, but par for the course for several other hellholes in which I've lived.

I lived in Dhahran for two years - gets real old, real fast. Though the Red Sea diving off of Jeddah was some of the best in the world.

Well Davis, I'm with you on that score. Saudi is a place full of religious nutters and for the last 3 years + I have been in Pakistan. Believe me it doesn't get any better, there is no hope for this place..............ever!

^I only spent a few months in Pakistan, thankfully. I did live all around it, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India, for a total of seven years. Only Bangladesh was on a Pakistan hellhole level, understandably as it used to be East Pakistan until 1971.

the undercurrents of violence is what blew me away.

shiatte muslims can't get into mecca. we tavelled by bus, eid. a woman friend and her five children. bus stopped in many places, think back in time, the real saudi, i was scared in places, machine guns at water stops. passport checks.
