Around here (Ubon) they seem to think that you waste less rice harvesting by hand than by machine. True or not, i don't know.

What is true though is that if you get some unseasonably strong winds, and it semi-flattens the mature rice stalks (in which case you also kick yourself for not harvesting a bit earlier) you are better off harvesting by hand- the mechanical harvester wastes too much. This happened locally last year.
