Anyone stayed at Phimai Inn in (yes) Phimai or Phanomrungpuri in Nang Rong?

Yep, still looking for the ultimate balance in swimmingpool, price and quality ;-). These hotels seem nice, but it's difficult to find prices online.

    Phimai Inn

    What we say:

Strangely situated behind a tire shop in what is described as new Phimai, Phimai Inn boasts a sparkling turquoise pool and tidy rooms. Room prices fluctuate according to size, amenities and location but all have a TV, hot shower and western bathroom. Those in the older building are quite worn and dark making those in the new appear even brighter in comparison and well worth the extra baht. A poolside restaurant and bar provides some serious R&R and a book exchange ensures that you have a decent read. Non-guests can use the pool for about 30 B/day. Though about 2 km away from the city's attractions, Phimai Inn is worth considering as a well-earned respite from the heat.
    What we were quoted

Thanks blue. That text pops up all over the internet. Questions was: have you stayed there?

There are 3 or 4 hotels similar to the Phi Mai Inn in the town. I stayed there one night only- it was fine, and decent value. The swimming pool was well maintained and big too. A typical aging provincial hotel really- prolly once The place in town, now a couple of newer places around.

In these places it's much simpler and cheaper just to roll up and organise it on the spot. These 'cheap internet deals' may be great when you're dealing with Sheraton type hotel chains, but for smallish provincial Thai hotels it ain't worth the hassle imo. You roll up, as often as not they've got no record of your booking, and you may well find you could have got a better deal by just turning up and asking. From my observation, Phi Mai has more than enough rooms for the traveller, really no need to book, and if you're the fussy type there are a few hotels quite near to each other so you are not restricted for choice.

Tenx sabang. We used to be quite random travellers. One must say that travelling with kids changes the setting a bit. A swimming pool is not necessary, but we found out that it heightens the atmpsphere for everybody when there is one available. I'm not much into prebooking, mainly because We don't know exactly a which dat we arrive somewhere. Or we might like to stay longer. But knowing the market really helps once we do arrive in a town.
Phmai in seems to be the only one with a swimming pool and it also seems they have a new wing with better rooms.

    Tenx again blue.
