These were taken way back on 11/4/10 & it's taken me a while to get pics uploaded here. Anyway, they're here now. Not the greatest quality I'm sorry to say. They're taken from a long way back with 10x zoom & have been re-sized to meet the upload limit - so I may have ruined the quality more. I also had to contend with the g/f wanting to see each pic after it was taken.
In some pics you can see a couple of pictures in the background. They're the people that the party was in honour after their deaths.

looks like a lam cing concert, are you sure it was for a funeral? Not having a go at your pics but you really need to get at the front to take better pics at a concert. No matter how full it looks it's almost always possible to get in at the front. Although the zooms on cheapish modern cameras (like mine) are handy for getting up close you can see their limitations when you blow up the image. Anyway here's a shot from a concert at Korat Zoo yesterday, Takkedan Choladar the most popular female lutung singer over the past three years. I am hopping the mrs splashes out on a funeral concert for me, but not for a while- best way to go!

We cycled past a big 'funeral party' 3km from here this morning. Japanese guy, 42, one child - sick one day dead the next. Huge sound system the sounds travels a long way across the farmland.
The word 'sick' is all-encompassing. Obviously he would not have died if he had not got 'sick'
I clarified my wish that there be no Thai music played should I become 'sick' and die, instead the music on my laptop, on shuffle-play, at high volume please.

Yes I am aware of this, but the pics on stage looked more like ones of the performers than a couple of dead peeps.

It may be a lam cing, I'm just going on what the g/f told me & she said is was after some people parents die, so I assumed funeral.
No probs re pics comments & agree getting to the front would have made better pics

Having been to several Issan concerts I personally enjoyed viewing the photos in the air conditioned comfort of my home.

If you haven't been to one, you should try it once.

Sensory overload is an understatement.

Being just around the corner from 60 may have something to do with enjoying the photos more than actually experiencing the act----ya think?

They remind me of my wedding night in Issan, when we had the same type of stage
+ dancers..wife took a while to u/stand why I liked dancing at the VERY front edge
of the stage..hee-hee.
Have also been to other wedding-parties that have had the same set-up,but at one
particular show near Cha-Am..the girls were so naughty on stage I could not believe it (for a family show)...raunchy stuff...never did get their agents No.

You're lucky then, I'm almost 60 and get carted off to over 100 concerts every year and get complaints if I don't dance enough. Seats are OK but sitting on concrete or tarmac for six hours can be a pain in the arse!

I use to enjoy the concerts but now days I really couldnt be bothered with the drunks,Katoys,The music, the fights. Seen a few shut down before they even start due to violence
The last few years you cant have a concert with out hiring a small army and bribing the police to come and keep the young lads from killing each other.

There is never a problem with TV concerts, anyone looking like a real low life or drunks are just not tolerated at all.Upcountry the fight problem is far worse than in and around Bangkok, even in small Issan towns one districts kids will attack another, while in villages it's normally one village against another. You can usually tell when there will be trouble kicking off, lots of small kids around is better than the cops for deterring violence, the cops are often never around when needed anyway.
I did go to a Bangkok concert two years ago to see Jin and it was all rather edgy, found out after that two people had been shot dead at the same one the year before
Apart from TV concerts Wat concerts are probably the safest these days and the violence is not as bad as in the old days according to the real old timers. In the 60's singers were even shot dead at concerts. It's a pity a minority can't enjoy a concert without being helplessly pissed, but then look at the situation in western town centers when the clubs close.

There I thought Hawaiian funerals were interesting. The one I saw the preacher got up and played the ukelaili. No dancers like the Issan funeral, however.

Thai Chinese also have similar funeral concerts in Bangkok, they normally stop the concert about 10 PM, burn the body, then carry on. More often the music is luktung but it all looks pretty similar as far as the stage and dancers go except luktung dancers will wear more elaborate and many changes of costume.

I think your pictures are good. The motive is more important than the pictures technical quality, really.
Excuse my ignorance; what are these concerts ? Some mention TV, wedding, funeral ?
I guess the wedding and funeral ones must be private functions, whereas the TV is perhaps a public event - with entrance fee ?

BTW, if you do want technically better pictures, you can upgrade to an DSLR and not by the kit lens(es) that comes with the camera, but go up in quality and buy the semiprofessional lenses. E.g. a 70-200 mm zoom with f/4.

If taking pics on the stage you really need a larger zoom, up to 400mm. The funeral, wedding and bodlean concerts are not normally private, at least I have never been turned away. If it's a sit down Chinese style meal as well then you cannot eat unless invited, semi private I would say they are and that's mostly Bodlean concerts (for becoming a monk)

TV concerts never have an entrance fee and you just turn up for the inside studio ones as well as outside. Some studio concerts are not live being pre recorded, these are often lip synced and start and stop to get it just right and recorded in sections.

The only concerts where you need tickets (free) are awards and sometimes radio station concerts. The only ones where you pay outside are famous singers i.e. Siriporn, Jintara etc. These are normally 100 baht and have been for over ten years. Other than that concerts take place at up market venues such as beer Holland where the entrance fee can be steep. Concerts at cafes normally require only ordering a fixed food or drink but sometimes there is a fee.
Open air concerts at wats for fund raising are the most widespread concert venues. At large Wat fairs there are hundreds of stalls selling food and market stuff and typically a likay show and out door film as well as fun fairs for the kids and the usual rifle ranges and dart throwing stalls. These concerts often start a bit later to give people time to go around and donate money.

Going to what is a private one tomorrow- a Police concert, should be interesting. before have walked into private government concert at BITEC and sat down for the free food and booze as well as very posh Navy ones where all the people were in silk etc, nobody dares say anything as nobody wants to lose face in case somebody important invited you! never get away with it at home.

Yep. Same where ive been. Cant be arsed to get caught up in the middle of all that shit, and probably end up getting blamed for it. I only ever turn out to smaller events, where its less likely to happen. The Step daughter got raped at one a few years ago, and no fooker was ever charged.

This stage was set up amongst some houses just off the main road. I said earlier that I thought the concert was for a funeral, but maybe more a remembrance event to honour the parents that had passed away some time ago. The g/f just said they were having a party as their parents had died - but the deaths didn't sound like a recent thing.

^^ Falang involved or blamed at a concert fight? never heard of such a thing, people worry too much. Normally it involves not much more than a bit of a scuffle where one brave lad hits another then promptly runs off followed by the assaulted and friends. if I am honest across a range of concert types and venues there is serious trouble at a very small percentage. Women of course should never go alone,or be left alone unless they know a lot of people there.
