    Bangkok Transport Advice

I'm going from Korat to Hua Hin by bus this week. While transiting Bangkok I need to drop a dead PowerBook off at the Apple Repair Center which is at the Modern Home Tower, Nonsee Rd. Changnonsee (near Lotus, Rama III).

So, I need to go from Mor Chit to Rama III and then on to the Southern Bus Terminal.

Any suggestions on how to make this journey? I'll be carrying a small suitcase and the PowerBook, so I don't want to do too much walking.

    TIA

    Ummmm..... taxi?

Actually take the skytrain from mo chit to chong nonsi then a taxi from chongnonsee to souther bus terminal.

If traffic is really bad after chong nongsi take the skytrain to taksin then a boat to pinkloa then a motorbike to southen bus terminal.

Rama III is an awkward place to get to without wheels

It would save you a lot of hastle if you just took a taxi there and then another taxi to the bus terminal...in all would cost maybe 300 baht

I went to Hua Hin a few weeks ago and took the train from Hualmphong.

Maybe that's easier if you're on the BTS network anyway?

It was slow though - took about 6 hours to get there! ( but the train did break down)

You know, I used to be a real rot fai fan -- traveled all over Thailand by train. But the passenger service has deteriorated so much of the last few years that it's hardly worth it. We took the delightfully misnamed "Sprinter" from Chiangmai to Bangkok last year and it was a total disaster. It took over 12 hours, the carriage rocked back and forth so violently that it was all but impossible to have a meal or beverage and the seats were horribly uncomfortable.

Anyway, I'm now a confirmed customer of the faster and more comfortable highway bus services.

I'd love to go back to riding trains, though.

I've done it a few times as well. Nothing like arriving at that lovely little station in Hua Hin.

I've done first class from Bangkok to Korat and also Bangkok to Nong Khai a couple of times. But, the last time up to Nong Khai was four or five years ago. The cabins are nice enough with clean sheets and all. But, I find I spend most of my time drinking beer in the dining car, and sleep it off in the cabin.

last time I took the train to Nong Khai - about 8 yrs ago - I had a couple of beers in the dining car before the train left the station here in Bkk.

Shouted a beer for the boss and during the chat he asked me if i wanted a girl for the night. I was a bit surprised as i was travelling 2nd class sleeper and it's not exactly private.

he told me don't worry...we have girls who book the first class sleepers so they can entertain in private...albeit short time...

i love the entrapreneurial (sp) ways of these thai maidens

Did the whole Bangkok loop via taxi. Total fare, including the expressway toll was about 320 baht. Little traffic. All went well.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Whole 'nother story....

Three to five days to get a replacement drive from Singapore....

Crap service, actually. Especially for a machine under AppleCare (extended warranty).

So we wait. And, maybe next week, I make another trip....

Me too...have travelled all over the world by train...really love it...did HK/Lon by train in the 70's..back in the days of communist Russia...we weren't allowed off the train anywhere in russia except Moscow..then there was only one main line...with a few passing bays strategically placed about 600 kms apart in the middle of nowhere...wait sometimes 6-8 hours for the other train...everyone got off the train for a major party..except for the 6 stupid foreigners who were encouraged to stay on the train by the armed soldiers!

Anyway, in my early days in LOS I took the train the Arunyapathet...cheap man...44 baht...you could sit anywhere you liked cause the whole train was 3rd class...305 kms from Bkk ...took 7 hours..needless to say I came back by bus

Failed Matsushita hard drive. Kind of strange because the SMART system gave no prior notice. The drive just slowly decayed and then crashed. SMART just kept on saying "Verified" so I figured it was something else causing the problem. When it finally hard failed, SMART said, "Failing". No kidding.

Klongmaster -- I'll let you know if I'm coming in or if Apple will deliver....

I ride the train in Thailand a bit (prolly a dozen times in the past 4 years) from BKK to Nong Khai or Udon.
First Class is more than flying, but I look at it as trans and accommodation, so in that sense its cheaper. Another problem is the only 1st class train, going both ways, is an overnighter, so no good views. Beers are cold and cheap and the beds are fairly comfortable. I'm flying into BKK in mid May with my dog and hope they'll let the 3 of us on the train to Udon. (me and my two bitches!)
